To overcome this, researchers have developed a new AI-based approach that offers a powerful new way to analyse Type Ia supernovae.

Measuring cosmic distance

Type Ia supernovae are a class of exploding stars that play a central role in measuring cosmic distances.

They act as “standardisable candles”, with astronomers comparing their brightness to track how the Universe has expanded. This makes them a key tool for mapping the evolution of the Universe.

But interpreting the signals from these supernovae is tricky. The observed light is impacted by the properties of the parent star, the surrounding environment and the host galaxy where the explosion occurs.

These effects are usually untangled using detailed spectroscopic observations which measure how much light arrives and how it is distributed across different wavelengths.

But this is time-consuming, and with next-generations observatories like the Vera C. Rubin Observatory expected to discover hundreds of thousands of Type Ia supernovae each year, the resulting in datasets will be massive.

“Collecting detailed, homogeneous spectra at multiple epochs for very large samples will be impossible, given the sheer volume of data expected in the coming years,” explained Professor Roberto Trotta, Imperial College London and the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA).

“For this reason, it will become increasingly important to extract reliable information even from photometric data alone – that is, from the brightness of supernovae.”

AI-based model to expand the Universe

Astronomers are currently unable to unlock the full potential of these surveys. They use only a small fraction of supernovae – as little as 1% – for which detailed spectroscopic measurements can be obtained.

This new method – CIGaRS (Combined Inference and Galaxy-Related Standardisation) – could change that. It uses simulations and machine learning to link what astronomers see, and the underlying physical properties of the Universe within a single, self-consistent model for the first time.

<img decoding="async" fetchpriority="low" class="lazy " src="https://www.newsbeep.com/au/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/ai-based-method-to-unlock-the-secrets-of-supernova-light-and-universe-expansion-1780393607040_1024.j.jpeg" width="768" height="432" alt="Astronomers can use the light from supernova to determine how the Universe is expanding. Image: Adobe.

Astronomers can now also estimate distances to the supernovae using brightness measurements alone, achieving a level of precision four times better than traditional methods.

In testing, researchers gathered a catalogue of over 1,500 selected supernovae – around the size of current catalogues – and expanded it by roughly ten times to resemble what could be collected in a single month in future observations.

The method recovered several linked properties at once, including the expansion of the Universe and the influence of galactic environments on supernovae. Its precision is similar to that gathered from previous analysis based on smaller samples of spectroscopic measurements using images alone.

News reference

CIGaRS I: combined simulation-based inference from type Ia supernovae and host photometry, Nature Astronomy, May 2026.
