Clint Eastwood is retired. That is, according to his son<\/a>. \u201cI have many fond memories of working with him,\u201d musician and composer Kyle Eastwood said in November, in concert footage that\u2019s gone viral this week. \u201cNow he\u2019s retired, he\u2019s 95 years old. But I was very lucky to be able to work with him on quite a few films. It was a great experience for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Way to bury the lede, Kyle! Eastwood hasn\u2019t officially confirmed his retirement, but if he has indeed brought his filmmaking career to a close, presumably to stare into the middle distance on a farm somewhere (that feels very Clint, doesn\u2019t it?), it\u2019d mean 2024\u2019s Juror #2 \u2013 a legal thriller starring Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette \u2013 was his curtain call.<\/p>\n

And it would also bring to a close a career as defined by its mad diversity (Unforgiven, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Letters from Iwo Jima AND that action comedy with the orangutan?) as it is Eastwood\u2019s vague ambiguity as a celebrity. Just what is he like? Is he funny? Stern? Intimidating?<\/p>\n

Luckily, many of the actors who\u2019ve worked with him over the years have shared quirky anecdotes about the man in question. We\u2019ve gathered a handful of them in the hopes of getting to the bottom of him.<\/p>\n

Both Laura Linney and Tom Hanks have shared insights into working with Eastwood over the years<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The pair, who starred in 2016 drama Sully: Miracle on the Hudson, were left feeling relaxed by the director\u2019s gentle filmmaking approach.Speaking to The Independent for new interview series Life in Pictures<\/a>, Linney \u2013 who also worked with Eastwood on Absolute Power (1997) and Mystic River (2003) \u2013 revealed that his hesitancy to shout on sets stems from his experiences working on westerns<\/a>, including Rawhide. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe talks in that level voice. He stands next to the camera, watches the scene, goes, \u2018OK you can stop. Did you feel good about that? I felt good about that. Were we in focus? OK, we can move on.\u2019 That\u2019s how he rolls. The reason he doesn\u2019t yell \u2018action\u2019 or \u2018cut\u2019 is because of the westerns he made. Because if someone yelled, the horse would jump and get scared, so everybody\u2019s quiet on set.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we all have nervous systems and it\u2019s true \u2013 when someone screams \u2018action\u2019, particularly if it\u2019s a scene where you have to concentrate, it takes a little time to recover from that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hanks concurred, once stating on The Graham Norton Show: \u201cWhat\u2019s it like working with Clint? He treats us like horses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morgan Freeman<\/p>\n

Morgan Freeman, who starred in Eastwood\u2019s Oscar-winning films Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2005), felt Eastwood\u2019s experiences as an actor made him a better filmmaker \u2013 so much so that everyone often comes away thinking he\u2019s the best director they\u2019ve ever worked with. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t fool around with actors,\u201d he once told US interviewer Larry King. \u201cHe hired you to do that job, so he ain\u2019t doing it for you. He respects the actor. Everybody who\u2019s ever worked with him comes away with that feeling \u2013\u00a0that this guy tops.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meryl Streep<\/p>\n

When Clint Eastwood wanted Meryl Streep to star in 1995 romance drama The Bridges of Madison County, the studio didn\u2019t approve of his decision \u2013 despite the then 45-year-old being the same age as the character she was playing. Eastwood pushed back. \u201cClint made a, I gather, case for me, which I was glad about,\u201d she said in a documentary about the making of the film, adding: \u201cAnd I would certainly have made a case for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Angelina Jolie<\/p>\n

Angelina Jolie was \u201cterrified\u201d about the prospect of working with Eastwood due to his renowned one-take policy, but the actor felt she delivered a better performance in 2008 drama Changeling as a result. \u201cHe\u2019s famous for shooting just one or two takes, but because of that, you know he\u2019s not going to drain you emotionally,\u2019\u201d she told Indie London<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll be very prepared from the moment you walk in the door, and so you have this feeling of having to bring your all, but if you bring your all and give it everything you\u2019ve got until you\u2019re emotionally drained. He will capture it on film and he won\u2019t ask you to do it 20 times. So, it does allow for you to really push yourself. And because he does do everything in one take, everything is very fresh.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt Damon<\/p>\n

Damon worked with Clint Eastwood on 2009 sports drama Invictus \u2013 and was forced to get used to the director\u2019s quick-paced groove after \u201ctesting the theory\u201d that he only likes one take. Speaking on First We Feast<\/a>, Damon explained: \u201cWe did the first take. It went pretty well. Clint says, \u2018Cut, print, check the gate,\u2019 which means we\u2019re gonna move on. And I said, \u2018Hey, boss, maybe you think we could get one more?\u2019 He just turned and goes, \u2018Why? Do you want to waste everybody\u2019s time?\u2019 Damon worked with Eastwood again in Hereafter (2010).<\/p>\n

Jeff Daniels<\/p>\n

Actor Jeff Daniels revealed a softer side of Eastwood after they worked together on the thriller Blood Work in 2002, recalling that the filmmaker quelled his nerves when he appeared anxious on the set. He was playing an alcoholic detective in the film, and admitted to Eastwood that he wasn\u2019t sure he could do it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m walking down the set with Clint Eastwood, and Clint said, \u2018If you can do [the 1996 black comedy] 2 Days in the Valley and you can do [the deeply stupid 1994 comedy] Dumb & Dumber, you can do this,\u2019\u201d Daniels recalled.<\/p>\n

Which is nice! But Daniels also added, during this appearance on Stephen Colbert\u2019s talk show in 2021, that he and Eastwood had an earlier interaction which spoke volumes about Eastwood\u2019s apparent love of gross-out humour. Cornering him at a celebrity golf tournament, Eastwood expressed to Daniels his admiration for Dumb & Dumber.<\/p>\n

\u201cEastwood comes walking across the breakfast tent and he\u2019s looking right at me,\u201d Daniels remembered. \u201cAnd he [says], \u2018Jeff Daniels. I saw Dumb & Dumber. The toilet scene \u2014 that happened to me.\u2019 He started laughing and turned around and walked away.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the uninitiated, the scene in question saw Daniels\u2019s character unknowingly drinking laxatives and being forced to evacuate his bowels in the home of a woman he\u2019s attracted to. The more you know!<\/p>\n

For a scene in Eastwood\u2019s 2012 film The Trouble with the Curve, Justin Timberlake was asked to clog dance with his co-star Amy Adams \u2013 which Eastwood was all for, despite Timberlake having difficulty breaking out the moves.<\/p>\n

\u201cGene Kelly he wasn\u2019t,\u201d Eastwood told USA Today. Asked if he, too, would clog dance to woo a lady, Eastwood expressed his enthusiasm. \u201cIf there\u2019s a great looking gal that you\u2019re hitting on and she wants to clog, well then, OK\u2026 clog.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe actually couldn\u2019t get the clogs off him,\u201d Timberlake added\u2026 jokingly? Maybe? Maybe not?<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd they were Amy\u2019s,\u201d Eastwood replied. \u201cI borrowed them.\u201d<\/p>\n
