{"id":713415,"date":"2026-06-03T21:50:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T21:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/713415\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T21:50:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T21:50:16","slug":"nascar-news-former-f1-driver-kevin-magnussen-to-debut-in-san-diego-as-shane-van-gisbergens-trackhouse-racing-teammate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/713415\/","title":{"rendered":"NASCAR news: Former F1 driver Kevin Magnussen to debut in San Diego as Shane van Gisbergen&#8217;s Trackhouse Racing teammate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE wildcard program that unearthed Shane van Gisbergen as a NASCAR star will add its latest chapter when the Cup Series visits the streets of San Diego for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/trackhouse-racing-set-to-revive-project-91\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">As foreshadowed by V8 Sleuth<\/a>, Trackhouse Racing is officially reviving its Project 91 initiative to field Kevin Magnussen at the Naval Base Coronado circuit later this month.<\/p>\n<p>That will neatly see the Dane feature as van Gisbergen\u2019s teammate, along with fellow Trackhouse regulars Ross Chastain and Connor Zilisch.<\/p>\n<p>Magnussen is familiar to motorsport fans around the globe primarily for his nine seasons as a hardnosed midfield racer in Formula 1.<\/p>\n<p>He famously took a podium on debut for McLaren at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix and delivered Haas\u2019 first and only pole position four years ago in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2014-Albert-Park-Magnussen-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-256746\"  \/>Kevin Magnussen en route to second place at Albert Park in 2014. Pic: an1images.com \/ Ross Gibb<\/p>\n<p>Magnussen, who previously made a single appearance in IndyCar, nowadays calls the World Endurance Championship home (racing in a factory capacity for BMW). \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His NASCAR debut will come aboard the #91 Qualcomm Chevrolet at a brand-new street course, similar to the circumstances in which SVG flourished in 2023 at Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to be able to bring back Project 91 again this year, especially at San Diego,\u201d said Trackhouse boss Justin Marks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were waiting for the right opportunity with the right partner and driver to bring this Project 91 entry to fruition.
