A Victorian government department crowned a repeat child sex offender as the state’s “disability pride champion”, before officials realised his criminal past and stripped him of the award.<\/p>\n

The department says an administrative bungle led to Cameron Bloomfield, 40, being honoured at the Victorian Disability Awards in December 2024.<\/p>\n

By the time Bloomfield accepted the award at a ceremony, his criminal record included findings of guilt for indecent assault, committing an indecent act with a child under 16 and trying to procure sex with a child under 16.<\/p>\n

The Victorian Disability Awards are run by the Victorian government’s Department of Families, Fairness and Housing and recognise people who champion inclusion in the community.<\/p>\n

In 2024, nominees were required to submit a police check consent form.<\/p>\n

The ABC understands Bloomfield complied with the requirements, but details about his criminal history were missed by department staff.<\/p>\n

“An administrative error was made by the department during the screening process,” the department said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“The department discovered the error in December 2025 and immediately rescinded the award.<\/p>\n

“The department has since reviewed and updated its processes.”<\/p>\n

Bloomfield, who has an intellectual impairment, has been a prominent disability and LGBTIQ+ advocate for years, and once testified before a Victorian parliamentary committee.<\/p>\n

He has also been interviewed by numerous media outlets, including the ABC.<\/p>\n

In April this year, he was jailed for three months after pleading guilty to breaching reporting obligations as a registered sex offender.<\/p>\n

Last month, a bail hearing in the Supreme Court was told Bloomfield’s offending dated back to 2005, and he was sentenced for reoffending in 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2020.<\/p>\n

According to a 2013 County Court judgement, Bloomfield tried to groom and procure sex from four children and was jailed for a minimum of 27 months.<\/p>\n

“You were well aware what you were doing was wrong and unlawful,” Judge Felicity Hampel said at the time.<\/p>\n

In the most recent incident, Bloomfield messaged two teenage boys on social media and is alleged to have written to one, “What are you doing and what are you wearing?”<\/p>\n

The Mentone man met up with one boy at a sports oval and was reported to police by the teenager’s mother.<\/p>\n

Bloomfield, who is appealing the severity of his jail term, was released on bail last month despite opposition from police and his victims.<\/p>\n

Police alleged he was an unacceptable risk to the community and contacting children from the case.<\/p>\n
