{"id":714854,"date":"2026-06-04T13:41:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T13:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/714854\/"},"modified":"2026-06-04T13:41:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T13:41:18","slug":"australias-tobacco-black-market-branded-global-laughing-stock-as-illegal-rates-trump-dozens-of-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/714854\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia&#8217;s tobacco black market branded \u2018global laughing stock\u2019 as illegal rates trump dozens of countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s flourishing tobacco black market has been called a \u201ctotal failure of policy\u201d as the country leads dozens of others in an alarming statistic.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/politics\/alarm-bells-pressure-builds-on-deluded-labor-as-shocking-data-shows-billions-of-tobacco-excise-lost-to-black-market\/news-story\/6823f16f8d07c62d61637faf8491e5de\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"6823f16f8d07c62d61637faf8491e5de\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Bureau of Statistics data released this week<\/a> found national nicotine consumption increased by almost 40 per cent between 2017 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Illicit products accounted for 80 per cent of total tobacco consumption in 2025, marking a major increase from 2017 when that figure was just 12 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The 80 per cent market share figure far exceeds the comparable data from studies of European nations and other countries including Canada and New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Former Australian Federal Police detective Rohan Pike has labelled the fresh ABS data \u201coutrageous\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia had gone from \u2018world leading\u2019 to the global laughing stock of tobacco control,\u201d he told Sky News.com.au.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must remember who caused this total failure of policy. It is the same public health advocates that the government go to to seek the solution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s like asking the arsonist how to put out the fire. They need to apologise and move aside so we can blow up our policy and start again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also said Australia\u2019s tobacco policies were \u201cbased on a fallacy in that health authorities think they can stop everyone from smoking and consuming any nicotine product\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can&#8217;t.
