(Photo by Kirk Irwin/NHLI via Getty Images) The Washington Capitals enter the offseason with questions surrounding franchise icon Alex Ovechkin. The veteran winger just finished his 21st NHL season and still hasn’t indicated whether he plans to keep playing or walk away from the game. The 40-year-old long-time captain is a big man around the league. That next decision should not only shape Washington’s plans for the 2026-27 campaign but also become one of the biggest updates of the summer in the NHL.

Alex Ovechkin and Washington Capitals NHL future outlook

Alex Ovechkin will apparently take some more time to decide about his future, according to the latest NHL news roundup. The Washington Capitals captain intends to make his intentions known at some point in July, according to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston. Ovechkin just finished a five-year, $47.5 million contract, and still could sign another deal if he decides to return. The Russian superstar appeared in all 82 regular-season games in 2025-26. He led the Capitals with 32 goals and recorded 64 points, proving he can still play a big role despite entering the twilight of his career.Several factors are thought to be involved in the decision. Ovechkin is expected to meet with his family and discuss the organization’s plans with Washington’s front office. His decision to return for a 22nd NHL season could depend on potential roster upgrades and the team’s competitiveness.Ovechkin’s uncertainty has made him one of the most closely watched figures in the league. But his decision has repercussions far beyond Washington, as it could spell the end of one of hockey’s most decorated careers.Free agency is right around the corner, and as the Capitals’ offseason planning ramps up, clarity will be important. NHL updates and trade rumours will likely continue to be filled with speculation about the legendary forward’s future until then.

Alex Ovechkin #8 of the Washington Capitals skates against the Columbus Blue Jackets during the second period at…

[556
347126,10231,64,63,9848,9427,575,347124,11424,59158,347127,85,347125,4791
post-715054","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nhl","tag-2026-27-season","tag-alex-ovechkin","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-free-agency","tag-hockey-career","tag-nhl","tag-nhl-future","tag-nhl-news","tag-nhl-offseason","tag-roster-upgrades","tag-sports","tag-sports-speculation","tag-washington-capitals
["GET
