{"id":715159,"date":"2026-06-04T17:06:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T17:06:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/715159\/"},"modified":"2026-06-04T17:06:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T17:06:17","slug":"as-india-rises-in-critical-minerals-race-can-it-dent-chinas-dominance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/715159\/","title":{"rendered":"As India rises in critical minerals race, can it dent China\u2019s dominance?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/india?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">India<\/a>-US pact on critical minerals has put the spotlight on New Delhi\u2019s potential as an alternative to China, but analysts say despite the country\u2019s significant resources, it is unlikely to dent Beijing\u2019s dominance in the sector any time soon.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Delhi and Washington signed a framework agreement on May 26 during US Secretary of State Marco Rubio\u2019s visit to India to secure supplies of critical minerals and rare earths, including their mining and processing.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">According to a US embassy statement, the framework would allow the United States and India to engage in international efforts to protect sensitive supply chains from \u201ccoercive market practices\u201d and reduce their collective \u201cvulnerability to single-source monopolies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The bilateral pact was signed before the Quad countries \u2013 Australia, India, Japan and the US \u2013 agreed in Delhi to launch a US$20 billion critical minerals framework.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The India-US pact comes amid mounting concern over China\u2019s export controls on rare earth elements and strategic metals vital for global technology supply chains.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar described the agreement as \u201csomething very timely and critical\u201d, while Rubio underscored the strategic importance of ensuring reliable long-term access to critical minerals and supply chains for both countries.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and India\u2019s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar shake hands after signing a memorandum of understanding in New Delhi on May 26.
