{"id":715481,"date":"2026-06-04T20:57:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T20:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/715481\/"},"modified":"2026-06-04T20:57:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T20:57:10","slug":"china-warns-australia-that-55-per-cent-beef-quota-could-apply-within-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/715481\/","title":{"rendered":"China warns Australia that 55 per cent beef quota could apply within days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">China has warned Australia it could be slapped with an additional 55 per cent tariff on beef imports within days if it exceeds new shipment quotas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Starting this year, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-01\/china-hits-australian-beef-industry-with-tariff\/106191726\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106191726\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Beijing introduced new quota and tariff arrangements for major beef-importing countries, including Australia,<\/a> in a bid to protect local farms and beef producers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australia&#8217;s annual import quota was set at 205,000 tonnes of beef shipments, about one-third lower than its total imports into China from 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Once that load is exceeded, a 55 per cent trade impost will soon come into effect.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-01\/china-hits-australian-beef-industry-with-tariff\/106191726\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New China tariff on Australian beef <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">An Australian meat industry peak body is &#8220;extremely disappointed&#8221; after China imposes a new tariff on Australian beef imports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Earlier this week, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/trb.mofcom.gov.cn\/myjjdc\/art\/2026\/art_3e7fd8c0d1714670a154e6a1192d52e9.html\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China&#8217;s Ministry of Finance and Commerce issued an alert to Australia<\/a> that it had reached about 90 per cent of its quota, just six months into the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">China&#8217;s state media said the ministry&#8217;s alert notice was the fourth issued to Australia since the new quota system started.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Previously, the ministry announced in March that imports of beef from Australia had reached 50 per cent of the annual quota under its safeguard measures, and reached 80 per cent in May,&#8221; said the Global Times, a major English state media site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australian beef is highly prized in China and is sought after in restaurants and high-end supermarkets for what is perceived as better taste and quality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Australian government has lobbied China to lift or expand the 2026 quota, but Beijing has shown no indication of moving.<\/p>\n<p>Tariffs &#8216;serious&#8217; but not deadly for Aussie beef industry<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) general manager of international markets, Andrew Cox, said there would likely be a reduction in trade with China once the new tariffs are imposed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t think it will totally stop, but certainly 55 per cent is a significant barrier to trade,&#8221;
