Looking for a way to scratch your nostalgic itch? Cassette<\/a>, a new video playback app for iOS, lets users watch their own videos as if they were on a VHS.<\/p>\n

The app, which launched earlier this week, lets users relive the days of VHS by transforming videos from the photo library and transforming them into tapes, sorted by year and album, that can be \u201cloaded\u201d into a digital VHS player by tapping on it. The videos come with a VHS tape\u2019s cover sleeve that has handwritten stickers with the year on them.<\/p>\n

These videos will play one after another without your input, letting you binge through them in one sitting. Devin Davies, the creator of the app, reasons that this is because people typically hunt for a \u201cspecific clip, watch it, and then move on\u201d, denying other clips the opportunity of being rediscovered in your gallery.<\/p>\n

\u201cCassette steals a little bit of your free will to choose and replaces it with these forgotten videos, just like the good old days,\u201d Davies said in the official launch video of the app. The app creator also doubles down on the nostalgia trip by adding the location, date, and timestamp in a retro pixel font in the corners of the video, just like the VHS of old.<\/p>\n

Cassette is available on the App Store<\/a> now, both in its free and premium subscription versions. The former plays a randomly selected video, while the latter removes this restriction; prices start at US$0.99 (~RM4) per month and US$5.99 (~RM25) per year. In our hands-on experience, however, the app is only allowing us to avail the lifetime subscription plan for RM39.90.<\/p>\n
