World No.1 Scottie Scheffler<\/a> has unleashed an all-time spray on his caddie during a frustrating opening round at the Memorial Tournament.<\/p>\n

Chasing a rare PGA Tour<\/a> three-peat, Scheffler made the turn at 2-under, but immediately gave one of them back on the par-4 10th.<\/p>\n

After three more pars, he was back to even after a poor wedge shot on the 14th found the bunker, and he made bogey. Frustrations started to grow after his tee shot on the next hole found a fairway bunker, although he still managed to make par.<\/p>\n

But he could no longer contain his emotions after his tee shot on the par-3 16th went to a watery grave in a greenside pond.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought I was in the water. I don\u2019t know what to do,\u201d he said towards caddie Ted Scott, who had already picked up Scheffler\u2019s bag and was walking towards the drop zone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like that was a good shot,\u201d he said, to which Scott simply replied \u201cit was\u201d.<\/p>\n

From then on, it was a monologue to which most weekend golfers could relate. He was ranting mostly about the wind direction, which he suggested in his rant had changed direction in the minutes leading up to the shot.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow I\u2019m in the water because it came in out of the right,\u201d Scheffler continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely flushed a 7-iron and we get the wind wrong and I\u2019m in the water. I don\u2019t think you understand how frustrating that is.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike that was a good shot. Really was, flushed it, right on line. Wind turning out of the right. Golly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t understand what I\u2019m meant to. I don\u2019t understand. I really don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was five yards short of the green because it\u2019s into, off the right. Like there\u2019s no way it could curve that much if the wind is helping.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so frustrating \u2026 I\u2019ve lost a ball. I\u2019m hitting good shots and dropping from hazards. You cannot get the wind wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the drop zone, he played his wedge to about three metres but couldn\u2019t make the putt for a double-bogey 5. It ended a streak of 100 consecutive par-3s played without making a score of 5 or worse.<\/p>\n

Scheffler bounced back with a chip-in birdie on the 17th, before signing for a 1-over 73 after a par on the 18th.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s six shots off the lead, shared at 5-under four ways between Wyndham Clark, JJ Spaun, Tommy Fleetwood and Ryan Gerard.<\/p>\n

Scheffler and Scott began working together in 2021. Scott won two Masters<\/a> with Bubba Watson before switching.<\/p>\n

Adam Scott is best of the Aussies at even par. Jason Day and Min Woo Lee are two shots further back.<\/p>\n

When asked post-round if he had any fun at any point during the round, Scheffler gave a half-laugh as he rubbed his chin and said: \u201cNot that I can recall at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

A reporter then suggested his chip-in on the 17th.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee, that\u2019s the thing that can be so frustrating about golf. I striped one on the hole before that and I end up in the water. That one I kind of hit thin, and you get a good bounce and I end up on the fringe and I chip in.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, what a game.<\/p>\n
