I had to be smart, and don&#8217;t waste too many energy, the situation looked great, with the UAE team riders pulling. I had a chance to win and I took it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T15:35:15.622Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e8fa2f8a-858f-4d80-8f08-65c7ad4cfe7d\">Gery&#8217;s first WorldTour victory didn&#8217;t just come from her legs, but also from intelligence, following Brand around the final bend, 200m the line.<br \/>The Frenchwoman won the Under 23 World Race title last year aged just 19 and is a real talent for the future and today was just confirmation of that.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s her third win this year after she beat a stacked field at Brabantse Pijl then the GP F\u00e9minin de Chamb\u00e9ry a few days later.<\/p>\n<p>Still so young, we really don&#8217;t yet know what kind of rider she is, but she can climb reasonably and showed today what punch she has. FDJ United-SUEZ take to the front and nail it. There are gaps on the descent, with pink jersey, Anna van der Breggen not there at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T14:24:43.467Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-00446ab8-aea0-48e0-bf27-6b8b158b6d4b\">The breakaway have worked their socks off on this climb and they&#8217;ve held on, Gaia Segato crossing first, Chantal Pegolo second, with Alison Jackson third.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T14:22:56.320Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-be9a8339-09a6-4e18-95df-419fcf1159b3\">Plenty of the sprinters have been dropped, but the top of the climb is close and there&#8217;s still 26km to go.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T14:21:30.163Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-77c014df-c8f7-431c-9462-1c6db800a473\">Luccon is swallowed up by the Movistar bunch too and the rest of the break will follow soon as they&#8217;re only 35 seconds up the road.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T14:19:38.183Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b28f4d6d-ca90-42b4-b4be-3f636a3bc841\">Van &#8216;t Geloof is caught by the bunch.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T14:18:27.644Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-00823490-7375-448d-ab0d-c5467c06157e\">Both Marjolein Van&#8217; Geloof and Sara Luccon have been dropped from the breakaway on the climb. The three remaining leaders have only 41 seconds on the bunch.<br \/>This climb tops out 26.9km from the line, three kilometres away.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T14:15:52.687Z<br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-30km-to-go\"\/>30km to go <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ba52dcad-a404-4cf2-ad1e-214d6bdc9b52\">There&#8217;s been another crash, this time at the back of the bunch and all riders are back up and riding.<br \/>The peloton has completely re-formed, while the brakaway have a lead of 50 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T14:12:54.904Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-74951239-5fbd-406f-85a0-490c74dc1384\">the climb to Pietrogavina is 9km at an average gradient of 3.6%, though the final 4km is steeper.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T14:09:54.631Z<br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-intermediate-sprint\"\/>Intermediate sprint<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-81eea889-f304-4b34-994a-bb489194e821\">Sara Luccon wins the intermediate sprint and the breakaway take all the points at the intermediate sprint, with the peloton one minute behind.<br \/>There are 35 points avalable at the finish, and a total of 54 over the ensuing two days. Balsamo started the day leading the points classification by 97 points, so cannot be caught.<br \/>We&#8217;re on the climb.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T14:00:46.145Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-14ce189c-92b8-4199-94f5-1b291a4444f8\">Looking good for the break to make it to the sprint now, especially as Lidl-Trek are now nowhere to be seen near the front.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:59:07.364Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-3346dbea-fcec-4b4d-8755-798626d0395a\">FDJ United-SUEZ are on the front too, so it seems as though Demi Vollering will try to take some of the bonus seconds at the intermediate, especially as it&#8217;s uphill. <br \/>Balsamo is more interested in the attendant points, 12, 8, 6, 3, 1 available at this sprint.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:56:51.441Z<br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-40km-to-go\"\/>40km to go <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-1894a758-9ffa-4962-96a2-caad2da0402d\">With the intermediate sprint just over 6km away, Pegolo, Van&#8217;t Geloof, Jackson, Luccon and Segato lead by 2.45.<br \/>Reusser is back on the bike but some way behind the peloton.<br \/>Femke Gerritse is leading Van der Breggen close to the front of the peloton.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:53:15.562Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-793d7fc4-bab1-4231-b341-22c16c0d01f2\">After falling in the first crash, Marlen Reusser (Movistar) has reportedly crashed again and is stopped by the side of the road.<br \/>Meanwhile, Van der Breggen is back in the bunch.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:51:22.773Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7312701e-790f-46f2-b968-e1e0ed702a90\">10km to the intermediate sprint and the gap is 3.10. EF Education-Oatly are at the front of the bunch alongside Lidl-Trek, Nina Berton&#8217;s helmet characteristically lopsided.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:49:28.801Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-bb9ff5e2-9731-45fc-bdfc-bd38ee0911f9\">Of course, on the other side of the &#8220;unwritten rules&#8221; argument is the fact Lidl-Trek have Isabella Holmgren fourth on GC, so continuing to ride does benefit her.<br \/>However, the maglia rosa group are in the convoy of vehicles behind the peloton and they should regain contact soon.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:46:37.459Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-77debc7c-fa06-465c-8448-fd3461a5c1ab\">The famous &#8220;unwritten rules&#8221; of cycling suggest it is wrong to ride if a stage race leader crashes, but Lidl-Trek had been leading the bunch for the sprint for a fair few kilometres.<br \/>The SD Worx chase is made more challenging now as the road is steeper.<br \/>Gaurischi is now back in the group with her team mates and straight to the front.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:43:37.319Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-4be46d17-86da-411e-b624-23a2fe539a4d\">Van der Breggen&#8217;s group is larger now and just 65 seconds behind the peloton.<br \/>Other teams are getting interested inthe sprint and coming to the fornt with Lidl-Trek.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:42:13.448Z<br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-50km-to-go\"\/>50km to go<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-49f40561-bd6a-403f-b93d-10535ce20003\">Lidl-Trek are continuing to ride, though apparently not in full flight, while Van der Breggen is about 90 seconds behind.<br \/>Lidl-Trek clearly want to either take the stage to a bunch kick, or perhaps take the intermediate. The latter option is unlikely now, as it&#8217;s only 15km and the gap is 4.10.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:39:13.503Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-87c97b8b-e2e4-4de0-a509-eca2e84c9e17\">It seems as though Guarischi was the first to go down, with Van der Breggen going down hard on her right side.<br \/>Van der Breggen is two minutes behind the peloton, this could be a disaster for Van der Breggen&#8217;s GC bid.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:37:44.491Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-04fff6d4-5249-4895-a1dd-ec9d92bc3864\">Further up the road there is a split in the peloton, though Lidl-Trek appear still to be riding.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:36:50.318Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-5cde3e2a-9588-4d80-92f4-af83421c93ad\">The maglia rosa is getting her chain on the bike, but seems to be OK physically.<br \/>Back on the bike she&#8217;s being guided back to the peloton escorted by team mates, though Barbara Guarischi is being seen to by medical staff, though she appears OK.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:34:40.559Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7c87e4eb-c5d2-4432-87be-426ef8625603\">20km until the intermediate sprint now, it looks like the breakaway will take it, which means Balsamo will secure the red jersey.<br \/>There&#8217;s been a mass crash iin the bunch, with Anna van er Breggen down.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:29:14.926Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-3842a08e-32b7-44b3-a5e4-d092618ad2b8\">Interesting tactics from Lidl-Trek as it&#8217;s them leading the peloton as the gap just edges down. Human Powered Health are close to the front too, after taking second place in yesterday&#8217;s stage with Maggie Coles-Lyster.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:23:08.404Z<br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-60km-to-go\"\/>60km to go<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-2338fd78-d602-4783-b534-43186f2efcd1\">It&#8217;s only dragging uphill for now, more false flat than a climb, but its taking its toll.<br \/>Pegolo, Van&#8217;t Geloof, Jackson, Luccon and Segato lead by only 5.40.<br \/>The intermediate sprint is 26km away yet, can they be caught by then?<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T13:17:20.543Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0bc5e5d5-1e59-4819-8747-6d2171d91b9f\">For the first time in a while the peloton are within six minutes of the breakaway. Bronzini was unable to sprint that day after being caught in a crash and there were tears at the finish.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T12:57:51.336Z<br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-80km-to-go\"\/>80km to go <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-f29fe8b2-315f-4a9e-af48-120dc7e5e37a\">Serena and La Bella are suffering now, they&#8217;ve dropped to 6.20 behind the leading group, less than two minutes in front of the peloton.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T12:56:00.006Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-6d6bb2b9-e1f5-4c78-8acb-38b45a7e8148\">We&#8217;re heading past Piacenza, somewhere the Giro has visited before. Or maybe they&#8217;ll ride for the stage, the finish of which is similar to stage 3, which Balsamo won convincingly.<\/p>\n<p>2026-06-05T12:25:08.324Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-26f31c57-b92b-4d47-a4ea-f6bf583e5970\">There are only 103 points available in the rest of the race &#8211; including today, so Balsamo can seal the red jersey today if she wins the intermediate sprint.
