FORMER Tickford Racing enduro stalwart James Moffat<\/a> has lauded a change in approach that has kept Cam Waters<\/a> in the Supercars title fight despite the Monster Mustang lacking its usual outright speed.<\/p>\n

Moffat, however, warns that without a serious uplift in pace, the ultimate championship prize will remain out of reach.<\/p>\n

Consistency has been the name of the game for Waters in 2026.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s how he holds fourth in the points despite being ranked 10th on qualifying averages.<\/p>\n

Waters has long been one of Supercars\u2019 premier performers over a single lap \u2013 as evidenced by him winning the season pole awards in 2022 and \u201924 \u2013 but he has not had a front-row start since last year\u2019s Repco Bathurst 1000.<\/p>\n

The last of his 32 career poles came 47 races ago. The longest pole drought of his career was a 50-race stretch from Pukekohe 2017 to Townsville 2019.<\/p>\n

Moffat, who spent eight years co-driving at Tickford including four with Waters, weighed in on the situation via the latest episode of The Undercut.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, the consistency is definitely keeping him in that top four, top five at the moment and I think probably we have seen a bit of a change in Cam in his approach,\u201d said Moffat.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think in years gone by, he would have found himself in an incident which would have been a race-ending incident or he would have dumped a heap of points and he wouldn\u2019t be sitting fourth, because his frustration might have got the better of him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s definitely a change in his approach.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the speed just isn\u2019t there at the moment for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

And that ultimately spells trouble.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be a factor in the championship, you\u2019re going to need speed. The consistency will (only) get you so far,\u201d he elaborated.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the moment based on what we\u2019ve seen, the sample size we\u2019ve had this year, they\u2019re not good enough to win the championship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Waters\u2019 teammate Thomas Randle<\/a> is 13th in the points.<\/p>\n
