Mautone

Date posted: 6 June 2026

After McLaren failed to feature at the front on Friday, Oscar Piastri admitted he doesn’t have “any great ideas at the moment” to combat the team’s lack of pace around Monaco.

Not shying away from sharing their expectations that Ferrari would be the team to beat around the streets of Monte Carlo, Piastri and Lando Norris’ Thursday remarks rang true across the first day of practice, with the Italian squad settling comfortably into the lead of the timesheets in both FP1 and FP2.

Rolling out of the harbourside pitlane at the start of FP1, the prospect of running on par with the likes of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton came to an abrupt end when the lap times came rolling in, with the pair instantly over a second off the early benchmark pace — a margin that only grew as the hour progressed.

Sporting a striking one-off livery to celebrate McLaren’s 1000th race start, style didn’t equate to speed in the Principality, with Piastri largely tracking through the opening hour level on pace with Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg.

With a peak time of 1:115.291s, the Australian ended the first session as the eighth-fastest driver, almost three-tenths back on his teammate, and a huge 1.5 seconds back on the hometown hero’s benchmark.

“It felt okay, just not as speedy as we would like, unfortunately, so yeah, a bit of a difficult one,” Piastri admitted.

“I think we made a bit of progress for FP2, but, yeah, I mean, we went from a second and a half off to a second off, so it’s been a tough day for us, for sure.

“So some things to find overnight, definitely.”

He continued, “We always expected Ferrari to be quick, and they look very, very quick as well.”

“But, yeah, we were hoping we would be a fair bit closer, so yeah, let’s see what we can try and muster up for tomorrow.”

The second session went from bad to worse for McLaren when a battery failure — at first glance similar to the issue that stripped George Russell of a podium in Montreal — struck Norris out of FP2 after his MCL40 lost all power at the Nouvelle Chicane.

“We don’t know conclusively yet,” Rob Marshall, Chief Technical Officer and Chief Designer at McLaren, said.

“He had an electrical problem on the car and it shut down, but we’ve not had enough time to go through the data and find out exactly what’s gone wrong yet.

“So it could be anything, but it’s electrical.”

The reigning world champion’s absence put more weight on Piastri’s shoulders as the team desperately tried to recover its way up the timesheets, but in a session that saw the Australian dodging both debris and traffic around the 3.3km lap, there was little progress made.

When the chequered flag waved on FP2, Piastri found himself one position higher as the seventh-fastest driver and five-tenths closer to Lewis Hamilton’s benchmark, however, a one-second deficit still remained.

When asked whether McLaren had identified any solutions to its pace deficit, the #81 replied: “Not massively, no.”

“You know, I think in today’s Formula 1, there’s never anything you can do to turn the car completely upside down,” he continued.

“So we’ll try and find something for sure, because we need to, but, yeah, I don’t have any great ideas at the moment.”

Armed with slightly more confidence in the Woking-based outfit, Marshall sang a different tune, affirming McLaren thinks it “can make it a bit better” ahead of the most important Qualifying of the season.

“I think we were struggling in the initial part of the lap,” he explained.

“And then as it went through sector two and three, we started to be a bit more competitive.

“So I think maybe that’s tyre temperature or maybe something else, but we’ve got a bit of stuff to work on, certainly, in the first half of the lap.”

Piastri will be back on track for one final hour of practice this evening, needing to maximise every last second before he takes on the high-stakes shootout around the unforgiving Monte Carlo streets.

Free Practice 3 will commence at 20:30 AEST, followed by Qualifying at midnight.

Image: McLaren MasterCard Formula One team

Monaco Grand Prix Some of the most intense battles for the championship have been between Fangio and Stirling Moss in the 1950s, Lauda and James Hunt in the 1970s, Senna and Prost in the late 1980s, Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen in the late 1990s, and Hamilton and Vettel in the 2010s.

Formula One is widely regarded as the pinnacle of motorsport, attracting millions of fans and viewers worldwide. The sport is also a huge business, involving billions of dollars in revenue and expenditure. The teams compete for prize money, sponsorship deals, and media rights, while the drivers earn millions of dollars in salaries and endorsements. The sport is also influenced by politics, regulations, and controversies, such as doping scandals, espionage cases, safety issues, and environmental concerns.

The following is a list of all F1 World Drivers Champions by year, from 1950 to 2020:
1950-1959
1950: Giuseppe Farina (Italy) – Some of the most intense battles for the championship have been between Fangio and Stirling Moss in the 1950s, Lauda and James Hunt in the 1970s, Senna and Prost in the late 1980s, Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen in the late 1990s, and Hamilton and Vettel in the 2010s.

1950-1959
1950: Giuseppe Farina (Italy) –
