A shark killed a man who was\u00a0fishing off the coast of Western Australia<\/a>, police said on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The attack occurred off the state’s south coast at Michaelmas Island, close \u200bto the town of Albany, about \u200b390 \u200ckilometers (240 miles) south of the state capital, Perth, while the man was spearfishing with his family, according to the police.<\/p>\n

He was taken ashore, where paramedics treated him. “Sadly, he was unable to be revived,” they said.<\/p>\n

State authorities reported that a \u200b4.5-meter (14.8 feet) shark of unknown species was spotted by a member of the public near \u200bMichaelmas Island on Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Three deadly shark attacks in three weeks<\/p>\n

The attack comes just two weeks after a man was bitten by a shark at Kennedy Shoal<\/a> in Australia’s northeastern state of Queensland.<\/p>\n

The \u200cdeath followed that of a 38-year-old off Rottnest Island<\/a> near Perth \u200bdays earlier.<\/p>\n

There \u2060are around 20 shark attacks in Australia every year, but \u2060most of them are not deadly, according to data from conservation groups. Far more people are likely to drown than be bitten.<\/p>\n
