The latter city is just across the US border from San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>According to the IFF, the visa denials have \u201ceffectively denied the Iranian national team the opportunity for a level playing field and a competition free from discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Iran squad has been preparing for the World Cup in Antalya, Turkey, and was set to fly to Mexico on Sunday. The team said it has received its visas from the Mexico Embassy in Antalya.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"President of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj poses for a photo with the FIFA World Cup Trophy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/71f9636129b201138a9a413180fdab6803a3a03f.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">President of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj poses for a photo with the FIFA World Cup Trophy\u00a0Anadolu Agency via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier this week that the Iranian travelling party would be watched closely for people with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have no problem with the athletes, as we stated earlier, or their support staff,\u201d Rubio said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what we\u2019re not going to allow is for them to embed in their delegation a bunch of people that we know have nothing to do with athletics and have ties to the IRGC or things of that nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we were going to watch that very closely, and we\u2019ll continue to watch that very closely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran plays World Cup games against New Zealand on June 16 and Belgium on June 22 in Inglewood, California.
