He successfully passed through waivers after getting <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2026\/06\/astros-designate-cesar-salazar-rhylan-thomas-for-assignment.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">designated<\/a> for assignment on Thursday. Salazar could\u2019ve elected free agency, but he\u2019s chosen to accept the assignment.<\/p>\n<p>This is Salazar\u2019s second trip through the DFA process this season. The previous outright gave him the option to reject the assignment this time around. Instead, he\u2019ll stick with the only organization he\u2019s known as a pro.<\/p>\n<p>The 30-year-old Salazar has appeared in parts of four seasons with the Astros. He\u2019s slashed .189\/.295\/.216 in 45 games as a big leaguer. Salazar has been the guy Houston has called on when they need a stopgap behind the plate. He joined the club in May after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/diazya02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Yainer Diaz<\/a> went down with an oblique injury. Salazar went 1-for-18 while splitting the gig with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vazquch01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Christian Vazquez<\/a>. The Astros opted to replace him with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/priceco01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Collin Price<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Salazar is out of minor league options. Since he accepted the assignment, Houston can stash him at Triple-A as catching depth.
