The real-world sightings show the EV convertible in near-production form, with only minor camouflaging on its front badge.

First unveiled at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the Denza Z will be available in three versions: a convertible, a hardtop, and a track edition. The image shows a hardtop variant of the Z, and tape between the windshield and roof hints at ongoing pre-production.

Spotted at a suspected BYD facility.

The Z was unveiled with conventional Denza badging. The covered front logo in the sighting hints at exclusive touches for special editions. The Z was also seen in black. Previous announcements from Denza and BYD showed it in blue and “Fiorentine” green.

The image also shows the Z alongside other BYD vehicles, such as the Denza D9 MPV, and the BYD Shark, the latter of which has yet to be launched in China. It is likely that the image was taken by an insider at a BYD facility.

As the Denza Z’s planned July Goodwood launch approaches, more public sightings of the convertible are expected. Denza will prioritise international markets at first, with the Chinese market receiving the Z at a later date.

More on Denza and the Z

Alongside the Z9 GT, the Denza Z will serve as the brand’s top dog. It boasts a total motor output of over 1000 hp, and Denza claims it will complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in around 2 seconds. Like other BYD flagships, it will feature many of the firm’s latest tech:

e3 (Yi San Fang) tri-motor vehicle control platform

Disus-M magnetorheological (MR) active suspension with active road sensing

God’s Eye (DiPilot) 5.0 assisted driving

The Denza Z. Functional hood ducts are present as well, perhaps to the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra’s chagrin.

While China’s EV sports car market is still in its infancy, several rising stars have emerged, such as BYD’s FCB Formula X, MG’s Cyberster, and the Xiaomi-backed & Europe-bound SSC SC-01. These cars aren’t expected to compete with each other, instead fulfilling roles as enthusiast toys or brand flagships.

Denza’s domestic deliveries, May 2025 to April 2026. According to China EV DataTracker, domestic sales have slumped significantly since the start of 2026, with year-on-year monthly declines of 30-50%. In April 2026, the brand barely broke the 10,000 monthly mark, delivering 10,638 units.

The Z isn’t BYD’s first convertible, though. The firm first launched the BYD S8 in 2009, a petrol-powered convertible with extensive Mercedes-Benz styling cues. Sales were abysmal, with an estimated total of only 103 cars sold.

The ill-fated BYD S8.
