Credit: Reddit\u2018Attempted delivery\u2019 without an attempt<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Delivery issues were the most common complaint category in 2024-25, according to the Ombudsman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Among the most frequently raised concerns online is the infamous \u201cattempted delivery\u201d message.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">A quick online search reveals countless examples, many posted only days apart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cI got a text message saying (my) parcel would be delivered between 11.40am and 1.40pm today. Credit: Reddit<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Others have questioned why photo identification is still required when collecting parcels using a QR code sent directly to their phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Customers have also expressed frustration when parcels are redirected to post offices that are not the closest branch to their home, requiring additional travel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The inconvenience becomes even more significant when larger items are involved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">A <a class=\"css-1lg16vp-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/news\/sydney\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sydney<\/a> customer, who wished to remain anonymous, told 7NEWS.com.au she once took a half-day off work after receiving a notification that a 19kg parcel would be delivered that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Instead, she said, no one rang the doorbell or attempted to contact her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The parcel was later marked as an attempted delivery and redirected to a post office further away from her home, rather than the closest branch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-m9q2w0-StyledParagraph e16qmbih6\">&#8220;I was utterly speechless, frustrated and helpless.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cI wasted half a day because of AusPost\u2019s fault and then had to Uber home because the parcel was too heavy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cI ended up having to pay for extra transport and carry a 19kg parcel myself \u2014 it was honestly ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Delays and delivery routes<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Delays were another common source of frustration, often linked to parcels taking unexpected routes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">An online user who described herself as \u201canother disgruntled customer\u201d said a parcel sent from <a class=\"css-1lg16vp-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/news\/tas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tasmania<\/a> to <a class=\"css-1lg16vp-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/news\/vic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Victoria<\/a> was first routed through <a class=\"css-1lg16vp-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/news\/nsw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NSW<\/a> and <a class=\"css-1lg16vp-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/news\/qld\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Queensland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cI sent a package from Tassie to Vic but it was sent to NSW and then Queensland first before landing in Victoria again. Credit: Reddit<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Others reported similar experiences, with some saying their parcels appeared to travel back and forth between states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">One Reddit user said their parcel had moved between Victoria and Queensland three times while the expected delivery date kept being pushed back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">According to the Ombudsman, complaints about delays tend to peak between October and December, coinciding with increased parcel volumes in the lead-up to <a class=\"css-1lg16vp-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/lifestyle\/christmas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Christmas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Customer service complaints<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">For some customers, the frustration continues once they arrive at the post office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Reviews posted across <a class=\"css-1lg16vp-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/technology\/google\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Google<\/a> Maps frequently mention long wait times, poor customer service and inconsistent experiences between branches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Many Australia Post branches with hundreds of reviews have ratings of below three stars.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/bdfe640b5b250405fb13e8d093477de20703259d.png\" alt=\"Reviews for multiple Australia Post branches on Google Maps.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Reviews for multiple Australia Post branches on Google Maps. Credit: Commonwealth Ombudsman<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">One Facebook user shared her experience after a parcel worth $540 disappeared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Screenshots of correspondence from Australia Post\u2019s customer service team stated the item had been classified as lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWith all possible checks completed, we regret to advise that we can\u2019t locate your parcel. Your parcel is now considered lost,\u201d the email said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-m9q2w0-StyledParagraph e16qmbih6\">&#8220;We had hoped to give you a happier outcome today, and we\u2019re sorry that we couldn\u2019t.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cYou should contact the sender because they are best placed to offer you a solution according to their policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The post generated dozens of responses from other users, many claiming they had experienced similar situations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWhat utter bullsh1t. They are proficient in avoiding responsibility. Same happened to me,\u201d one comment wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Another added: \u201cThey need to start explaining how parcels just vanish into thin air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cSaying it\u2019s just lost is not a good enough explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What can consumers do?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">In a response to 7NEWS.com.au, Australia Post defended its performance, arguing Ombudsman complaints represented a tiny fraction of the total number of items handled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cAustralia Post delivered a record 2.2 billion items in FY25. We take our responsibility to deliver for the community extremely seriously, and Ombudsman complaints account for less than 0.0002 per cent of the total number of articles delivered,\u201d a spokesperson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-m9q2w0-StyledParagraph e16qmbih6\">&#8220;In a large-scale network, occasionally things don\u2019t go to plan, and in those instances, we work hard to quickly fix any issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Neither Australia Post nor the Commonwealth Ombudsman directly addressed why delivery issues, delays and lost items have remained among the most common complaints for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Australia Post said it investigates complaints and takes action where appropriate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1734e398fffee18816d6478fee2b190248c9948e.png\" alt=\"Another user complains about an \u201cattempted delivery\u201d despite being home.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Another user complains about an \u201cattempted delivery\u201d despite being home. Credit: Reddit<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The Commonwealth Ombudsman said most complaints are first referred back to the postal operator for resolution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe generally recommend that any complainant first raises their complaint with the entity they are unhappy with, because the entity can reconsider its approach and change its decision,\u201d a spokesperson for the Ombudsman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe do also formally investigate complaints when we think it is appropriate to do so, and we do so when the issues are particularly complex or systemic in nature, or when the postal operator declines to change its decision and we think that is unreasonable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cFeedback is regularly provided to Australia Post through our handling of individual complaints.
