As someone who believes Test cricket is the best format and should never disappear, that is not ideal…It’s not just the case that players have lost the ability to dig in.”

LONDON, ENGLAND – JUNE 07: Ben Stokes, the England captain, talks to England coach, Brendon McCullum after their victory during day four of the 1st Rothesay test match between England and New Zealand at Lord’s Cricket Ground on June 07, 2026 in London, England. (Photo by David Rogers/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

New Zealand captain Tom Latham said: “The curators (ground staff), I’m sure they didn’t think that the wicket was going to play like that and we certainly didn’t think the wicket was going to play like that.

“But both teams were faced with the same conditions… There were two quality attacks bowling on that surface and they (England) were able to exploit the conditions perfectly.”

– ‘Not good enough’ –

Former England captains Nasser Hussain was scathing about the quality of the pitch, telling Sky Sports: “I can tell you as a batter, nothing is worse (than) up-and-down bounce.

He added: “This ground has got so much going for it…but the bit in the middle (the pitch) is the most important bit and it’s not good enough at the moment.”

Hussain’s successor as England captain Michael Vaughan was even more brutal in his assessment of the Lords surface.

“I hope this is the week that is the trigger for the MCC hierarchy to realise the scale of the issue facing them,” Vaughan wrote in The Telegraph.

“I feel for the ground-staff, who do everything they can, but the square just isn’t quite right. The top brass are definitely aware they have a problem, and are trying hard to solve it, so I don’t want to stick the knife in too much. They are trying steaming, drop-ins, and moving fixtures elsewhere.

“But my view is they have no choice but to take the more radical option and start digging the square up, pitch-by-pitch, one each winter. This is a huge decision, because when they re-lay a pitch, it is unusable for three years. That would mean giving up a major match like a one-day international for that period, and that would cost £10m in revenue across the three years.

“However, MCC is a cricket club, and Lord’s the world’s finest cricket ground. They have to understand that the product is only as good as the pitch will allow it to be. Test cricket needs a good pitch, and Lord’s is judged by the highest standards. The two Test venues that probably get the most eyeballs globally each year are Lord’s and the MCG on Boxing Day.”

Meanwhile Rob Lawson, the secretary and chief executive of Lord’s owners Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), acknowledged the problem, saying in a statement after Sunday’s play: “We hold ourselves to the highest standards and are naturally frustrated when a surface falls short of those expectations.

Lawson, who cited unusually high May temperatures followed by heavy rain in the immediate build-up to the match as reasons for the sub-standard surface, said: “We recognise that the pitch for this Test has shown more variable bounce than we would have wanted.

And with next month’s inaugural women’s Test at Lord’s, between England and India, and a men’s Test against Pakistan still to come this season, Lawson added: “We fully recognise the need to act quickly.”

England captain Ben Stokes said the Lord’s pitch was “not ideal” for Test cricket after his side thrashed…

[564
1724,64,63,689,14675,16291,740,207979,24840,346234,1208,143709,24160,2057,349925,17071,2105,24161,329493,349924,1209,2022,45895,17055,24773,1736,3583,677,311748,15299,349922,349926,349919,2643,12540,85,349920,1211,125237,60611,45885,3586,349923,349921
post-722177","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-cricket","tag-asia","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-australia-and-new-zealand","tag-brendon-mccullum","tag-corporacion-mondragon","tag-cricket","tag-cricket-club","tag-david-rogers","tag-emilio-gay","tag-england","tag-england-captain","tag-england-v","tag-europe","tag-finest-cricket-ground","tag-gareth-copley","tag-getty-images-inc","tag-gus-atkinson","tag-highest-standards","tag-inaugural-women","tag-india","tag-london","tag-matt-henry","tag-michael-vaughan","tag-nasser-hussain","tag-new-zealand","tag-northern-europe","tag-oceania","tag-ollie-robinson","tag-pakistan","tag-quality-attacks","tag-radical-option","tag-rob-lawson","tag-sky-sports","tag-southern-asia","tag-sports","tag-sub-standard-surface","tag-test-cricket","tag-test-match","tag-three-match-series","tag-tom-latham","tag-united-kingdom","tag-variable-bounce","tag-wickets-falling
["GET
