Elon Musk\u2019s reusable rocket company SpaceX is set to raise $US75 billion ($106 billion), valuing it at an estimated $US1.75 trillion.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Magnificent Seven is growing, helped by AI expectations.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780906402_496_3b0739a0afce6122a9844b45a910cd4eacab082a8d5ead9b240325f6180b1233.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>The Magnificent Seven is growing, helped by AI expectations.Aresna Villanueva<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX carries a large AI component. Its initial public offering, alongside those expected to come from <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/technology\/anthropic-urges-global-freeze-on-ai-as-it-warns-of-losing-control-20260605-p6047x.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthropic<\/a> and OpenAI, will add to the membership of the so-called \u201cMagnificent Seven\u201d group of US tech behemoths: Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta Platforms, Tesla and Nvidia, named for their size and profits and their ability to shape their own industries.<\/p>\n<p>The Magnificent Seven\u2019s weight in the S&amp;P 500 has risen from less than 7 per cent in 2010 to over 30 per cent by 2024, according to research from Old Dominion University.<\/p>\n<p>This concentration makes the market especially vulnerable to shifts in perceptions about the use and value of AI and its applications, according to New York-based Dr Kevin Hebner, managing director and global investment strategist at TD Epoch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe market is especially focused on three companies\u201d \u2013 Nvidia, Anthropic and SpaceX \u2013 said Hebner. \u201cA particular concern given the transition to capex-heavy business models and our view that the positive impact of AI on productivity and revenues will take longer than consensus expects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Elon Musk\u2019s plan for orbiting solar powered data centres.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/062edbe0d7677da9fa5d523740d3d4b587334f54.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Elon Musk\u2019s plan for orbiting solar powered data centres.SpaceXRelated Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/markets\/investors-want-out-of-musk-s-spacex-gamble-they-may-not-have-a-choice-20260529-p601xb.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"SpaceX\u2019s mega rocket booster returns to the launch pad.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780906405_103_4ba507828073baa09c2071905d3e6ab09306bf16.gif\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>SpaceX purchased Musk\u2019s AI outfit xAI in February, valuing it at $US250 billion, and putting it at the core of his space ambitions. In addition to reusable rockets, and Starlink satellite-enabled internet, part of SpaceX\u2019s plan is to use heavy-lift Starship V3 rockets \u2013 still being perfected \u2013 to carry <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/north-america\/australia-leans-into-space-race-for-solar-power-with-china-20190920-p52ta4.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar-powered data centres into orbit<\/a>. Once there, they are expected to process massive, energy-intensive AI workloads, free from the constraints <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/victoria\/energy-for-democracy-a-plan-for-out-of-this-world-solar-power-20190531-p51tao.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of terrestrial electricity grids<\/a> and carbon concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The space vision Musk is floating on the market is \u201ceffectively a call option on space and all the future possibilities that come with that\u201d, said Hebner. In January, AI-chipmaker Nvidia suffered the worst single-day market cap loss in history, <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/markets\/955-billion-meltdown-wall-street-darling-suffers-biggest-one-day-loss-in-history-20250128-p5l7lt.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shedding nearly 17 per cent<\/a> or $US589 billion in a brief panic after a Chinese AI company revealed the low cost of training its AI model.<\/p>\n<p>Hon said the structural shift mattered \u201cbecause traditional index construction approaches (i.e. market cap weighted) naturally amplify the influence of winners\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, S&amp;P Dow Jones Indices <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/markets\/investors-want-out-of-musk-s-spacex-gamble-they-may-not-have-a-choice-20260529-p601xb.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decided against easing its criteria<\/a> to allow a listed SpaceX to join the S&amp;P 500 before a full year of profitability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs markets reward a narrow cohort of stocks, their index weights increase, further concentrating benchmark exposure and reinforcing a feedback loop,\u201d said Hon.<\/p>\n<p>The AI-driven and future-facing valuations of the Magnificent Seven (or Ten, once SpaceX, Anthropic and OpenAI are added) are so grandiose investors are reaching to the past for comparisons<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen this before,\u201d said Datt Capital chief information officer Emanuel Datt. \u201cWhen the American railroads were being built in the 19th century, investors rushed to own the rail companies, but the real wealth was created by the businesses that shipped goods across those rails.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>AI companies, which are helping propel the outsized performance of the market, may not be too different from railroads in the role they have for the economy, Datt says.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/markets\/spacex-anthropic-openai-what-if-one-of-the-mega-ai-ipos-fizzles-20260602-p6030n.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Valuations are sky-high for AI companies like SpaceX, and keep rising. Can it continue?\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780439112_398_5d1266593b88ef0e2fefe2578ebf5bc2f872d6e1.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking at the growing importance of AI among the Magnificent Ten, Datt said: \u201cThe question investors should be asking is \u2018who benefits from using it?\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He questioned if there may be other companies that end up making higher returns from AI in the future, once the current AI investment frenzy has passed, similar to how railroads themselves weren\u2019t as profitable as the commerce made possible by the tracks after they were laid in the late 19th century in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps a sign of faltering faith in the boundless profits of AI infrastructure was visible last week: concerns about overvaluation of tech stocks sent the S&amp;P 500 dropping 2.6 per cent on Friday, ending a 10-week stretch of gains. The tech-centric Nasdaq 100 fell about 5 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Even as retail investors reportedly flock to SpaceX stock, the broader question of how profitable AI will be, and indeed, <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/europe\/astonishing-brutality-pope-warns-of-unending-war-weapons-now-beyond-human-control-20260526-p600lh.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">where it sits within the economy,<\/a> persists.<\/p>\n<p>Hebner said that for exchange-traded fund investors, TD Epoch recommended a \u201cbarbell structure\u201d for portfolios. \u201cOne emphasis is clearly tech.
