That is the opinion of veteran journalist Brent Read and Broncos legend Gorden Tallis, although not everyone on the ‘NRL 360’ panel was convinced Maguire’s position at the club should be under any scrutiny.

While Broncos skipper Adam Reynolds told reporters on Monday the playing group is still confident in turning its fortunes around, recent losses to the Titans and Dragons have cast doubt over whether the defending premiers have another late-season charge left in them.

A tough run home will only make that tougher for the Broncos, who play current top eight teams in seven of their final 11 games to close out the year.

Brisbane need to win around eight of its remaining games to finish inside the top eight, so it is a tall task for Maguire and is why Read believes his position could be in question by the end of the season.

“When you’re 5-8 and you’re the Brisbane Broncos it’s not good enough,” Read said.

“You look at their draw — they could be 5-10 or 5-12 in four weeks and then it becomes a discussion because I always say it, it’s much easier to clean out a coach than it is to clean out a dressing room.”

Get all the latest NRL news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. The Broncos failed to qualify for the finals in 2024.

This situation seems different on the surface since Maguire was able to get the Broncos over the line in last year’s decider, although Tallis isn’t sure that should be as much of a selling point for the current coach.

“One was three minutes away from winning it, one was three minutes away from losing it. There’s not much between them,” he said.

“Kevvie would’ve won the same trophy. Andrew Webster would’ve won that. A lot of coaches would have… that’s not a Madge grand final. That’s a Reece Walsh grand final. It wasn’t all his doing.”

Tallis did concede “you can’t take that (premiership) away from him”, and veteran rugby league reporter Dean Ritchie certainly didn’t buy any suggestions Maguire’s job is under threat.

“It’s unfair,” he said.

“Do you know why Madge gets pressure? Because of his past. Because he’s got this reputation, whether it’s right or wrong, that he loses the dressing room after two or three years because of his intense coaching style. That’s why we question him.

“They are the defending premiers. Give him a break… let’s not lay the boot in for a bloke that won the grand final nine months ago.

“There’s no decision to make, he’ll be there next year coaching.”
