\n The problems plaguing Intel were not lost on Tan when he made his first public comments in a quarterly earnings report. \u201cThere are areas we need to improve, and there are no quick fixes,\u201d Tan said in April 2025.\n <\/p>\n
\n Tan, 66, a Malaysia-born executive who spent a dozen years at the helm of Cadence Design Systems, has mostly kept a low profile since taking over at Intel. So, when Tan made a public keynote speech last week at Computex, an annual trade show in Taipei that has grown in popularity because of the AI boom, a packed crowd was on hand to hear him talk.\n <\/p>\n
\n The crowd had likely gathered to learn more about Intel\u2019s core product \u2014 the central processing unit, or CPU \u2014 a chip that acts as the brain of a computer. Those chips have powered laptops and servers for decades.\n <\/p>\n
\n But CPUs are now considered essential to the AI race and have received renewed attention, giving Intel a fresh opportunity for a rebirth.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cThe CPU revival could save the company,\u201d Dan Nystedt, vice president of Asia-based private investment firm TriOrient, told CNN. \u201cThe majority of (Intel\u2019s) business is CPUs.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n In a statement to CNN, Intel said Tan has been focused on execution and putting its customers back at the center of everything it does. \u201cWith a stronger balance sheet now, a refreshed leadership team and a renewed focus on engineering discipline, Intel is positioned to capture the AI-driven growth opportunities in front of us,\u201d the company said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Graphics processing units (GPU), the type of chips Nvidia specializes in, are ideal for training AI models. But CPUs are seeing a spike in demand because they\u2019re useful for inference, the process of putting trained AI models to work. Inference is key to powering the new wave of AI agents that companies like OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are developing and deploying.\n <\/p>\n

\n OpenClaw<\/a> \u2014 which independently operates apps, web browsers and smart home appliances based on commands users send via messaging apps like WhatsApp \u2014 is one of the most popular AI agents today.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cThe CPU is now the conductor, and the GPU is the orchestra,\u201d said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in a keynote speech in Taipei this week ahead of Computex. Nvidia announced a major push into CPUs during the conference, introducing a new chip for laptops<\/a> and desktops and revealing that its Vera data center CPU is now in full production.\n <\/p>\n \n Tan told reporters on the sidelines of Computex that many CEOs have been calling him asking for more CPUs over the last month.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cThat\u2019s a huge opportunity for us,\u201d Tan said. \u201cWe really (got) excited.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Analysts say a higher demand for CPUs could give Intel a boost in sales over the next few years if it can quickly ramp up production and ensure manufacturing quality.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cWe are very focused on supply, making sure that we can delight the customer,\u201d Tan added.\n <\/p>\n \n Tan\u2019s strategy at Intel appears to be straight from his playbook at Cadence, where he streamlined operations, invested heavily in engineering, expanded the company with strategic acquisitions and cultivated deep relationships with its clients.\n <\/p>\n \n Tan has laid off approximately 34% of Intel\u2019s workforce and paused plans to expand manufacturing facilities in Germany and Poland. He also flattened corporate bureaucracy, brought in new talent, formed new partnerships, sold non-core business assets and redirected the company\u2019s focus back to its roots.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cAt our heart, Intel is an engineering company,\u201d Tan said during his Computex keynote. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what I decided from Day 1 \u2026 I have all the engineering report to me.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Tan has elevated the engineers and cut middle managers, allowing him to keep tabs on Intel\u2019s chip and AI business more directly. He has sold Intel\u2019s controlling stake in a subsidiary<\/a> in exchange for liquidity and hired senior executives from Qualcomm<\/a> and Arm<\/a> to lead its data center and AI business divisions. Tan has also brought in investments from Nvidia<\/a> and Softbank<\/a>, securing strategic backing and partnerships from influential players in the AI industry.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cTan has been trying to bring in more outside resources into Intel, so that the company has the time and space to not only adjust its chip-manufacturing process, but also bring in more clients to drive the production volume up,\u201d Chiayang Yao, an analyst with Taiwanese market research firm Digitimes Research, told CNN.\n <\/p>\n \n Meanwhile, Intel has received a helping hand from the Trump administration.\n <\/p>\n \n In August, the US government made an $8.9 billion investment in Intel\u2019s stock, roughly a 10% stake in the company, to help its ongoing efforts to expand research and manufacturing facilities in the US, while ensuring access to a domestic advanced-chip supply chain for national security purposes.
