He’s built a really good game. If needed, I’m sure he’ll go out there and perform.

“It’s the best thing for the footy team.”

The Australian’s Brent Read believed that while he could be used in the halves, Walsh could also fill a roving middle role previously given to Ponga in the Origin arena.

“Imagine Reece late in the halves, bobbing up in the middle of the field and getting the football, putting on the afterburners,” Read said.

And NSW diehard and Daily Telegraph scribe Dean Ritchie admitted that the selection “worries” him.

“That’s why they picked him,” NRL360 host Braith Anasta replied.

Reece Walsh earned an Origin recall.Source: Supplied

KULIKEFU FINEFEUAKI (QLD)

A deserved promotion for the Dolphins back rower.

20th man for Game I, Finefeuaki will begin the MCG blockbuster on the interchange bench, with Slater confirming to reporters the 22-year-old will be utilised.

Finefeuaki takes the place of the injured Pat Carrigan, who could be sidelined for both Game II and III after undergoing ankle surgery last week.

It’s been a stellar year for Finefeuaki, who has become a real metre-eater on an edge.

However, it’s been the young gun’s commitment to defence which has pleased Slater the most.

“He’s been jumping out of the screen all season to be honest. When the opportunity arose, he’s been standard of footy that’s acceptable for the Maroons,” Slater said.

“They’re great phone calls. Kristian Woolf needs a huge rap for the development of some of the Dolphins’ players and Kuli is a beneficiary of that

“He runs hard, he carries hard, he’s consistent but I’ve loved the improvement with his defence.

“Naturally he was excited. He’s been involved with camps in the past knowing he wasn’t going to be playing but now he knows he’ll be lacing up the boots next Wednesday night.”

Eels denied in controversial loss | 03:24

Get all the latest NRL news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. Sign up now!!!

DYLAN LUCAS (NSW)

If you ever want to know what the saying ‘banging the door down’ looks like — just ask Dylan Lucas.

After being named 20th man for the series opener, the Knights back rower went back to club land and has arguably been in career-best form, scoring tries at will and breaking defensive lines at will.

The 25-year-old also locked in his long-term future, signing a new deal to remain in Newcastle, and his looming Origin debut caps off an impressive start to the year for the rising star.

It remains to be seen where Lucas could slot in, and if he even does get minutes, with his club teammate Jacob Saifiti failing to take the field in Game I.

But regardless, Lucas has forced Laurie Daley’s hand when it comes to his team selections, with NRL360 host Braith Anasta coining him one of his favourite players.

“He’s so good, he has Origin written all over him… he’s old school, tough, runs good lines,” Anasta said.

“He’d be a dream for a half.”

Elsewhere, Knights recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan labelled him the “complete package”.

“Dylan has been a revelation on our team over the past few years,” O’Sullivan said.

“With his line running, speed, athleticism and edge defence, he is now the complete package.

“Dylan has matured into one of the team’s most influential leaders, he is analytical, vocal and drives standards both on and off the field.”

Dylan Lucas could make his Origin debut.Source: Supplied

MITCHELL MOSES (NSW)

Mitchell Moses has been named in Laurie Daley’s squad as he eyes a return to the No.6 jersey.

While he was Daley’s first choice five-eighth prior to the series opener, there’s a genuine argument to say he should not have been included in this squad for a number of reasons.

Firstly, he is carrying a hamstring injury which he suffered two days out from Game I, and as such hasn’t featured for the Eels since.

Secondly, NSW officials are said to hold concerns regarding his fitness — even though Jason Ryles was confident he would be fit to take the field.

“Should he be selected, he will be fine,” Ryles said.

“I’m very comfortable with him playing Origin. He deserves it and I think every time he goes and plays, he does really well, NSW does well. It’s part of having good players at your footy club.”

The Daily Telegraph’s Brent Read was of the same opinion, which could silence the doubts surrounding his fitness.

“He will be fit for the game, no question about that,” Read said.

“The message they are getting from Parramatta is that he is good to go… I think he is odds on to play at the moment.”

Mitchell Moses has been battling a hamstring complaint.Source: The Daily Telegraph

LOSERS

STEPHEN CRICHTON (NSW)

Multiple reports stated that Blues officials were concerned with Stephen Crichton’s lingering shoulder injury.

And they were right.

The Bulldogs star potentially was going to be left out of his side’s Round 14 clash, signalling his fitness issues were too much of a concern to take the field and ending his hopes of retaining his centre spot.

But instead, Crichton was named and took the field, even kicking the winning penalty goal.

However, after the clash it was clear his injury was too much of a concern for the NSW coaching staff and he was ruled out despite being named in the origin squad.

Crichton endured one of his worst performances in a Blues jumper in the series opener, dropping the ball on multiple occasions.

However, he did come up with a big moment, proving he is well and truly up to the grade, setting Ethan Strange up for a stellar try.

But in the end, he was clearly one of the players Daley was waiting on when it came to his injury reports — and Crichton’s didn’t come back favourably.

Stephen Crichton has been battling a shoulder complaint.Source: Getty Images

EZRA MAM (QLD)

As expected, Mam was axed from the Origin squad, replaced by teammate Walsh.

It hasn’t been the greatest of seasons for the five-eighth, who has struggled with his defence and his consistency.

He has also been out of touch during Brisbane’s five-game losing streak, dumped the bench for the clash against the Titans.

He ended up seeing the field early due to Tom Duffy’s head knock and flashed glimpses in the first half with ball in hand, but his puzzling last minute decision robbed Brisbane of a chance of a miraculous win.

On his day, he can be a real handful, and his performance in big games over the past few seasons indicate that he could be a threat at Origin level, but until he finds that form consistently, he’ll probably be out of Slater’s plans for now.

Mam’s omission means the Maroons won’t have any halves cover on the bench, but Slater indicated that Walsh could fill that role if need be.

‘No One’s Talked About More’ | 05:47

MORE NRL NEWS

TITANS MIRACLE: Broncos woes roll on as all-time try seals ‘Suncorp miracle’

BRONCOS BLUNDER: Legend exposes crucial error by under-fire star in upset loss

‘DON’T KNOW’: Storm’s sobering Katoa update as star faces uncertain future

BRONCOS (QLD)

The Broncos are in must-win territory now, needing at least eight wins from their last 11 games to be a chance of making the top eight.

Next up on the docket is a clash against another desperate team in South Sydney.

Both teams will be missing stars, but the Broncos will be hardest hit.

Payne Haas, Kotoni Staggs and Reece Walsh will be on Origin duty.

Walsh may not even play as 18th man on the six-man bench, but any hope the Broncos had of their fullback being released from camp to line up against Souths was quickly slashed by Slater on Monday morning.

“Reece is a part of the 19. He won’t be released,” Slater revealed.

There were also concerns surrounding Walsh’s fitness, and if he is playing with a niggle, the gun fullback has a slim chance of worsening his injury and therefore sitting out long-term.

“No, not really,” Maguire said when asked if Walsh was playing injured in Round 14.

“He’s fine to get up and about.

“I mean, you’ve got other moments in the game and he’s coming up with some pretty spectacular plays.

“… It was literally a ‘moment’ game today.
