{"id":724059,"date":"2026-06-09T00:20:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T00:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/724059\/"},"modified":"2026-06-09T00:20:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T00:20:10","slug":"recession-fears-for-majority-of-australians-in-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/724059\/","title":{"rendered":"Recession fears for majority of Australians in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A majority of Australians fear an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/australian-economy-1m3k\" class=\"sc-ezrozd dxCwVA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">economic<\/a> crash before Christmas, as savings accounts shrink around the country.<\/p>\n<p>A new Finder survey revealed 48 per cent of respondents thought a 2026 recession was \u201clikely\u201d, while a further 16 per cent said it was \u201ccertain\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/216f454aa9663787ac56c951ed14700fffc33a0c136dddd0cc4c2a5049ee45d5.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Millions of Australians fear a recession will come in 2026.\u00a0shih-wei<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s 64 per cent of respondents &#8211; the equivalent of 13.7 million Australians &#8211; who are bracing for a major economic downturn in the next six months.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, separate Finder research showed 42 per cent of Australians had less than $1000 in savings.<\/p>\n<p>Finder personal finance expert Sarah Megginson said Australians were stressed about the state of the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamilies all over the country are feeling a big financial squeeze, and many are worried things will get worse before they improve,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile a recession isn\u2019t guaranteed, the fact that so many people expect one shows just how anxious they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Megginson said fears of a downturn were already changing consumer behaviour as households tightened their belts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamilies are becoming more cautious about spending money and taking on new debt,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Finder\u2019s research shows 15 per cent of Australians are unsure if a recession is looming, while almost 18 per cent believe one is unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Just 3 per cent of respondents think a recession \u201ccertainly won\u2019t happen\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Megginson said now was the time to reduce unnecessary expenses and prioritise building emergency savings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEconomic uncertainty is scary, but taking a few proactive steps today can help you feel much more in control of whatever comes next,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A majority of Australians fear an economic crash before Christmas, as savings accounts shrink around the country.
