Donald Trump has forcefully denied he ever promised not to draw the US into war, having spent years pledging to avoid doing just that.<\/p>\n

The US president\u2019s own biography<\/a> on the White House website credits him with \u201cputting a stop to endless wars\u201d \u2013 raising questions about the US-Israel war on Iran, which he launched, with no end currently in sight.<\/p>\n

NBC\u2019s Kristen Welker pressed Trump in a Meet the Press interview that aired Sunday about his previous pledges to refrain from starting wars.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr President, in your first term, you held to that promise, and it was so fundamental to who you were as a candidate, to a first-term president,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat changed? Because you insisted no new wars.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t guarantee no war,\u201d Trump interjected. \u201cWhy would I have built the strongest military in the world? I built our military.\u201d<\/p>\n

His response sharply contradicts previous comments he has made over the years.<\/p>\n

1. 6 November 2024\"TrumpTrump promises no new wars at 2024 victory speech – video<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to have security,\u201d Trump said, accepting<\/a> his victory in the 2024 US presidential election. \u201cWe want to have things be good, safe. We want great education. We want a strong and powerful military. And ideally, we don\u2019t have to use it. You know, we had no war \u2013 four years, we had no wars, except we defeated Isis. We defeated Isis in record time, but we had no wars.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said: \u2018He will start a war.\u2019 I\u2019m not going to start a war. I\u2019m going to stop wars.\u201d<\/p>\n

2. 5 October 2024\"TrumpTrump touts ‘peace through strength’ at 2024 campaign event<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had no wars,\u201d Trump said<\/a> during a campaign rally at State College, Pennsylvania. \u201cWe had peace through strength. It was a great thing, peace through strength, and that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to send your kids out to war, have your kid blown up for a country that you\u2019ve never heard of and that doesn\u2019t want anything to do with you anyway. But I will not send you to fight and die in a foolish, never-ending foreign war.\u201d<\/p>\n

3. 5 August 2024<\/p>\n

In a campaign stop with controversial Kick streamer Adin Ross<\/a> during the 2024 election, Trump claimed \u201cthe only war\u201d which took place on his watch during the first Trump administration had \u201cstarted long ago\u201d, against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. \u201cAnd we defeated \u2013 I defeated \u2013 them in a very short amount of time, very quickly,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we had no wars under the Trump administration, and that\u2019s a great thing, you know. That\u2019s a really great thing. It was I think 82 years since that\u2019s happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we won\u2019t have wars again. But we could have a war before we even get there. That\u2019s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

4. 4 March 2023<\/p>\n

\u201cI was the only president in modern history who did not have any new wars.\u201d Trump said<\/a> at the CPAC convention. \u201cNo new wars. I finished some old wars. Remember when the Democrats and my Republican opponents would often look at me during the debates or whatever and they\u2019d say: \u2018No, no, he\u2019s going to bring us into world war III.\u2019 Because it\u2019s a personality type.<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cNo, I had the personality type that kept us out of wars because people knew that they weren\u2019t going to mess around here. That\u2019s why I rebuilt our military. We were strong. We were safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

5. 20 August 2020<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember we\u2019re going to be in war with North Korea? Remember? It\u2019s going to be a war? Right, congressman?\u201d Trump asked<\/a> at a rally in Old Forge, Pennsylania. \u201cThere\u2019s going to be a war \u2026 No, it would have been a war if you had Hillary Clinton. Would\u2019ve been a war if Obama were allowed to stay any longer. He thought there was going to be a war.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s the war? I don\u2019t see the war. Maybe things happen. You don\u2019t know. But there\u2019s been no war. Nobody killed. He would have lost 25, 30 million people.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI kept us out of new wars. Everyone said: \u2018Oh, Trump, it\u2019s his \u2013 he\u2019ll be in a war his first week.\u2019 Instead of that, I got you out of wars.\u201d<\/p>\n

6. 13 February 2016<\/p>\n

Trump has made anti-war statements for over a decade. Facing off with Jeb Bush, a former Florida governor, in a Republican presidential primary debate in South Carolina, he attacked the record of his brother, president George W Bush, who led the US \u201cwar on terror\u201d across Afghanistan and Iraq after the 9\/11 attacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously \u2013 the war in Iraq was a big, fat mistake, all right? Now, you can take it any way you want,\u201d said Trump. \u201cThe war in Iraq, we spent $2tn, thousands of lives, we don\u2019t even have it. Iran is taking over Iraq with the second-largest oil reserves in the world. Obviously it was a mistake. So George Bush made a mistake.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can make mistakes. But that one was a beauty.
