{"id":724870,"date":"2026-06-09T09:36:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T09:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/724870\/"},"modified":"2026-06-09T09:36:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T09:36:16","slug":"afl-news-2026-majak-daw-details-suicide-attempt-podcast-interview-former-north-melbourne-player-comments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/724870\/","title":{"rendered":"AFL news 2026: Majak Daw details suicide attempt, podcast interview, former North Melbourne player, comments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former AFL star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/person\/majak-daw-1mnc\" class=\"sc-ezrozd dxCwVA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Majak Daw<\/a> has regrets about the evening he attempted to take his own life, but he hopes his story can help others get through hard times.<\/p>\n<p>A week before Christmas in 2018, Daw attempted to take his own life on Bolte Bridge in Victoria, falling into a body of water that was 40 metres deep. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Majak Daw speaks about his suicide attempt.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/89b9b8dad496335819d61826c4f2f6fcd6f4f1b1169a7c052129040646b774be.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Majak Daw speaks about his suicide attempt.\u00a0Dos and D<\/p>\n<p>Daw, who became the first Sudanese-born player to be drafted when he joined North Melbourne in 2009, revealed the candid details of the events that happened that day when speaking on the Dos and D podcast this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I jumped off the bridge, I think I was like 40 metres deep,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started, because it was so far, drinking and swallowing water. And I was like, \u2018Nah, no way, I want to live\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI regretted it straight away. I tried to grab the rail and it was just too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daw suffered severe injuries to his legs and hips but managed to swim to the river banks before members of the public alerted police of the incident. <\/p>\n<p>After being transported to hospital, Daw learned that his pelvis was fractured and would require extensive reconstructive surgeries over the coming days. <\/p>\n<p>While he cannot recall how the night unfolded in its entirety, Daw does remember those who helped him and how the bridge had several cameras due to multiple suicide attempts happening there over the years. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was wearing these Asics runners and I was asking my partner at the time or some of my friends, \u2018Where\u2019s my shoes?\u2019\u201d Daw recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(They said) \u2018Did you forget, they\u2019re stuck in the bottom of the mud in the Yarra River\u2019. My hips were clamped for a week, just to keep it together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 35-year-old revealed doctors considered placing a metal piece in his back and had fears that he would never be able to walk again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just gives me perspective in terms of whilst you\u2019re in a coma and relying on people to make a decision for you, they made the right decision,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Daw managed to return to the AFL in 2020 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/afl\/news-2022-majak-daw-announces-retirement-melbourne-demons-20220627-p5j000.html\" class=\"sc-ezrozd dxCwVA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called time on his career in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He admits hearing others reflect on his story and how they\u2019ve been impacted has helped inspire him to continue discussing the importance of mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was so nervous, I genuinely was sweating bullets,\u201d Daw said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came into the auditorium and said hi to the boys &#8230;. I am so sorry to so many individuals that I broke their hearts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Majak Daw\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/b3c30af05f376fff47b69ff46e5e7c31bcc7397f.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Daw is an extremely popular member among the Kangaroos&#8217; playing group\u00a0nna\\cdesilva<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know how much I meant to people or how strong our friendships were.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI struggled with social anxiety for a period of time, even when coming back to the club because people are curious. They want to ask a question without being rude.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving a lot of people come up to me saying they lost a sibling through mental health or suicide, I am grateful. I just want to keep pushing this message. It is never that bad. The sun will rise tomorrow, won\u2019t it? Yeah, it will. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest inspirations was my partner when I found out she was pregnant with my son. I didn\u2019t want to be a dad in a wheelchair, I wanted to be running around with my son. That was one of my inspirations to get back walking. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son, he was such a miracle child.
