The Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday confirmed Ebola cases had climbed to nearly 600, raising awareness within the local population about the importance of safety measures.<\/p>\n

The outbreak of \u200bthe Bundibugyo strain<\/a> of Ebola was announced on \u200cMay 15, \u200cthough officials have since said it \u200bwent undetected for weeks, leaving health authorities behind the curve and struggling to bring it under control.<\/p>\n

One of the \u2060world\u2019s largest ever Ebola outbreaks is unfolding in three provinces long beset \u2060by armed conflict: Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu.<\/p>\n

In its latest statement published on X, \u200bCongo\u2019s government said the number \u2060of confirmed Ebola cases had increased to 598, including 115 deaths.<\/p>\n

It also said \u2060that 22 patients \u200bhad recovered from the disease and that \u200bnew cases didn\u2019t spread to more health \u200bzones.<\/p>\n

The cases \u200chave been recorded in 17 of Ituri\u2019s health zones as well as in seven health zones in North Kivu and one health zone in South Kivu.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf \u200cyou have a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or severe weakness, you should go to the nearest health center immediately,\u201d the statement said, urging populations to follow health workers\u2019 instructions and not \u200bto \u200battack them.<\/p>\n

Mistrust and resistance have hampered the \u200bresponse, with attacks on burial teams<\/a> and treatment centers \u2060reported.<\/p>\n

Medics are also struggling to secure basic equipment to stay safe and prevent further spread of the disease, according to more than a dozen doctors, humanitarian \u200bworkers and public health officials.<\/p>\n
