Applications are now open for the 2026\u201327 Powerhouse and David Jones Australian Design Commission, an initiative that supports emerging and established Australian designers to develop new products for the contemporary home.<\/p>\n
The annual commission offers one Australian designer $50,000 and a nine-month development period to conceive and produce a full-scale prototype in collaboration with David Jones. The program is designed to foster innovation in Australian product design while connecting designers with institutional, manufacturing and retail expertise.<\/p>\n
The selected designer will gain access to the Powerhouse Collection and the museum\u2019s workshop facilities, alongside mentorship and commercial guidance from David Jones. The resulting prototype will be unveiled in a window display at the retailer\u2019s flagship Elizabeth Street store in Sydney.<\/p>\n
Applications are open to designers based in Australia who can undertake a major project from concept development through to prototype delivery over a nine-month period. Submissions must include a project proposal, sustainability plan and budget, as well as supporting portfolio material.<\/p>\n
Applications close at 5pm AEST on 26 June 2026. The successful applicant will be announced in August, with the commission commencing in September 2026 and concluding in June 2027.
