It’s up to creator Liz Doran (Please Like Me) and stars Philippa Northeast (Territory) and Christopher Chung (Slow Horses) to maintain that gold standard. Netflix, TBC.

Neuromancer

William Gibson’s 1984 novel kickstarted modern science-fiction, introducing dystopian excess, online culture and helter-skelter technology. The question now is how to present Gibson’s vision of life circa 2035 when it’s only nine years away? Callum Turner (Masters of the Air) plays Case, a damaged hacker recruited for an online heist that introduces him to a menacing World War III veteran (Mark Strong, Dune: Prophecy) and a cybernetic mercenary (Brianna Middleton, Sharper). Apple TV, TBC.

Pride and Prejudice

It is a truth universally acknowledged that every era gets its own version of Jane Austen’s classic 1813 novel of romantic manners. After Jennifer Ehle and (a drenched) Colin Firth in the 1995 BBC series, there was Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in the 2005 feature. The latest version, delivers Emma Corrin (The Crown), as the witty, defiant and unwed Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) as the haughty Mr Darcy. Netflix, TBC.

Liv Hewson and Michael Dorman in Treasure and Dirt. Treasure and Dirt

With their pock-marked landscapes, secretive riches, and literal underground communities, outback opal mining towns are a perfect backdrop for a murder mystery. This Australian desert procedural, adapted from the novel of the same name by Chris Hammer, opens with the freakish murder of a miner, leading to an investigation by a local constable (Liv Hewson, Yellowjackets) and a homicide detective sent from the big smoke (Michael Dorman, Patriot). ABC, TBC.

Trinity

Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio put together this conspiratorial thriller, which revolves around the covert entanglement of America’s defence secretary (Richard Madden, Game of Thrones) and a nuclear submarine commander (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Morning Wars). I’m predicting a spicy tone for this nailbiter, because that’s what Mercurio did with his 2018 British series, Bodyguard, in which Madden played a former soldier protecting Keeley Hawes’ politician. Netflix, TBC.

War

This London-set legal drama deep dives into a fight-to-the-last-lawyer battle that unfolds when the high-profile marriage of a tech billionaire (Dominic West, The Wire) and a Hollywood movie star (Sienna Miller, The Loudest Voice) comes scandalously apart. Creator George Kay (Hijack) puts the focus on the legal tactics of the rival firms representing the adversarial exes. Expect some serious lawfare. HBO Max, TBC.

Big shows coming back

The Agency (season two): This CIA thriller with Michael Fassbender, Jodie Turner-Smith and Richard Gere, delivered a muscular, betrayal-laden debut. Expect more complications. Paramount+, June 22.

The Bear (season five): It’s the final season of this Chicago kitchen comic-drama, which has been all fine dining and flayed emotions. Hopefully, creator Christopher Storer can stick the landing. Disney+, June 26.

Black Doves (season two): Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw will return as the badass besties who somehow make camp banter and automatic weapons compatible. Binge, TBC.

Dark Matter (season two): This parallel-worlds science-fiction thriller, with Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly playing multiple versions of their respective characters, was engrossing and nightmarish. Apple TV, August 28.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (season three): Tolkien time is back as the most expensive show in television history continues to build out a stand-alone Middle Earth epic. Amazon Prime Video, November 11.

Maxton Hall – The World Between Us (season three): The little romantic-drama that could, this German-language (but set in England) series about torrid campus love has become a young-adult fiction blockbuster. Amazon Prime Video, TBC.

Nobody Wants This (season three): Kristen Bell’s frisky podcaster and Adam Brody’s rabbi will have a new set of personal tripwires to navigate, as the show becomes an annual fixture. Netflix, TBC.

Silo (season three): It’s a crucial season for this dystopian drama, which stars Dune’s Rebecca Ferguson and is set in a vast, isolated underground city. Outside world answers are due. Apple TV, July 3.

Ted Lasso (season 4): New team, same Ted.
