Credit: Instagram<\/p>\nPerth influencer and hairdresser Mia Langley says she is having \u201cpanic attacks and losing sleep\u201d after she was \u201cannihilated\u201d online for charging $250 for a social media class she is set to host with fellow content creator Sam Guggenheimer.<\/p>\n
The 20-year-old, who is from Perth\u2019s south, has gained a cult following of 122,000 across Instagram and TikTok and says she has taught hair-dressing skills to \u201chundreds\u201d of women around Australia.<\/p>\n
Langley told PerthNow she has been hairdressing since she was 15-years-old and started her business at 18-years-old. She has since hosted 12 hair education classes around Australia sharing her tricks of the trade.<\/p>\n
For her next event, Langley is teaming up with Guggenheimer to share their knowledge at an event called Not Just A Hairdresser, combining social media and beauty advice into a \u201cmasterclass\u201d.<\/p>\n
The pair are set to teach budding influencers and rising entrepreneurs how to grow their social media and build a brand that stands out from others.<\/p>\n
Langley said she will be spilling all her secrets on how to make videos go viral, editing tips and how to gain confidence in front of a camera.<\/p>\n
Langley was charging $250 for the event taking place at Bondi cafe North 44 on June 22.<\/p>\n
The ticket price caused a stir online with people accusing Langley of \u201cdaylight robbery\u201d with a \u201cpremium price\u201d.<\/p>\n
TikTok user Cate Small, who has 17,000 followers, shared a video on the platform that captured her disbelief at the cost to attend, labelling it \u201cdaylight robbery\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf there\u2019s more than five people attending that, I\u2019m leaving the country. I can\u2019t,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s also being held in the eastern suburbs. I live in the eastern suburbs, have lived here my whole life. I know a lot of people in the eastern suburbs, and I don\u2019t know a single person that would spend $250 on that.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf my friends told me that they were going to that, they wouldn\u2019t ever say that, but if they did, I\u2019d really reconsider the friendship because wow. I mean maybe it will be a bunch of 12-year-olds whose parents have paid for it, that could happen but wow. The egos wow.\u201d<\/p>\n
The founder of Influencer Updates Australia, Amber Paul, described the price as worrying, saying at the time of the event launch, the location wasn\u2019t even locked in.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Langley clapped back at the criticism, saying she wished she had an event like this to attend when she was starting in the industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can make f…ing bank on social media if you have the passion for it, and this is where to start. Thanks for the free marketing, girly,\u201d she said in response to Ms Paul\u2019s video.<\/p>\n
\u201cSam and I are giving you step by step on how to get into social media, how to get paid from social media from a business owner\u2019s point of view.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know a lot of girls who are young and want to get into this industry but are either too scared, don\u2019t have the confidence, or they don\u2019t even know where to start.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve taught hundreds of girls, and it\u2019s safe to say I have really succeeded in the education kind of industry, and Sam has been doing influencing for a very long time.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, on Tuesday, Langley announced that in celebration of her upcoming 21st birthday, she was offering 21 per cent off ticket prices.<\/p>\n
It will now cost $140 for those over 18 and $100 for a minor to attend in person.<\/p>\n
Those over 18 who can\u2019t make the event can purchase a virtual ticket for $180 to watch over Zoom, with a virtual ticket for minors costing $140.<\/p>\n

Langley said the online backlash has affected her, taking to Instagram to share she has been feeling \u201cupset and exhausted\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve never experienced something like that before…to me it felt like the whole world, the whole internet was annihilating me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you to everyone who did say nice things to me; it made me feel so much better.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not gonna lie, this has f..ked with my head a little bit, it has made me super upset… I just wanted to get on a flight home to Perth.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m going to work on my mental health now because it\u2019s really upset me what\u2019s happened.\u201d<\/p>\n
Langley left her boyfriend and family behind in Mandurah after moving to Bondi last month to pursue her \u201cdream life\u201d, but said this ordeal has taken a \u201cmental toll\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m having panic attacks on the phone to my mum and I\u2019m losing sleep,\u201d she told PerthNow.<\/p>\n
Langley said the event wasn\u2019t about making money; she just wanted as many people to attend as possible.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not the first time she has held an \u201ceducation event\u201d and has had people pay up to $400 for a hairdressing masterclass. Her past events have attracted anywhere between 20 and 70 people.<\/p>\n
Langley said there was demand from her fans to put on these classes and was \u201cgenuinely shocked\u201d to see the Bondi event cause so much outrage.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not out of the ordinary for me to put on an event like this, I\u2019ve toured Australia doing classes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not a \u2018money-grabber\u2019 or scammer, this is my true passion, trying to inspire young girls who see me as their idol.\u201d<\/p>\n
Langley\u2019s supporters stood up for her, saying her haters were \u201cjust jealous\u201d and \u201cmean\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are a mean girl,\u201d one Instagram user said in response to Cate Small\u2019s reaction.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat behaviour is actually disgusting, you just went online and publicly bullied someone.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another TikTok user said: \u201cWhat would you know, it\u2019s not reasonable for you to bash someone online who is making a living for themselves. She\u2019s a 20-year-old girl who has worked so hard herself and is now wanting to share her wisdom and trying to help others.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is it with people hating on other people\u2019s happiness and success? If you don\u2019t like it, just don\u2019t buy a ticket?\u201d a third added.<\/p>\n
However, others went on to say that \u201cbeing an influencer was 99 per cent luck\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no course or secret recipe or everyone would be influencers,\u201d one TikTok user said.<\/p>\n
