Umpiring legend Ray \u2018Razor\u2019 Chamberlain and Melbourne great Garry Lyon have gone head-to-head over the controversial Harry McKay set shot moment from last weekend<\/a>. <\/p>\n

McKay milked the 30-second set shot rule in the final two minutes of the Blues\u2019 narrow win over Essendon, when he marked the ball 60m out from goal in an implausible scoring opportunity. <\/p>\n

The key forward was allowed to take the set shot and use his 30 seconds, but the kick fell well short from goal and milked a valuable 40 seconds of game clock.<\/p>\n

AFL footy boss Greg Swann said the league had discussed potential solutions including the prospect of reducing the shot clock for marks outside 50m<\/a>, noting it\u2019d be \u201ccareful not to react to a (single) situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking on Fox Footy\u2019s AFL 360 on Wednesday night, Chamberlain suggested he\u2019d have called play on to McKay if he were umpiring.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like we need to empower our on-field official to be comfortable to be more assertive,\u201d Chamberlain began.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a circumstance such as this, I think what you can say to Harry when you recognise this kick might be beyond him and he might not be genuinely going for goal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you can move towards him and say to Harry: \u2018Take your kick, or I\u2019m going to call you to play on\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

However Australian Football Hall of Famer Lyon disagreed, leading to a debate between the two.<\/p>\n

Lyon: \u201cWhich, with due respect, if I was Harry, I\u2019d say: \u2018You get out of my road, I can kick 60 metres and let me take my 30 seconds\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chamberlain: \u201cAnd I\u2019d go: \u2018Move it on, play on\u2019. And then we can talk about it after.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyon: \u201cBut that\u2019s wrong, Ray, that\u2019s just blatantly wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chamberlain: \u201cYou say it\u2019s blatantly wrong. The laws of the game \u2014 hang on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyon: \u201cI haven\u2019t said anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chamberlain: \u201cYou\u2019re about to.<\/p>\n

Lyon: \u201cI know, I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chamberlain: \u201cThe laws of the game are allowed to be managed by the umpire. You\u2019re allowed to get 30 seconds if you are taking a shot for goal. But you don\u2019t let the person down on the back flank take 30 seconds, do you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyon: \u201cWell, he\u2019s not shooting for goal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chamberlain: \u201cAnd I don\u2019t think Harry was there either. The umpires are responsible for umpiring the game, Garry. Whether you think they\u2019re doing a good job or not, that\u2019s their job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyon: \u201cThat\u2019s not, that\u2019s a rot! That is a total rot! Harry says: \u2018Hey, I\u2019ve got 30 seconds, Razor. Get out of the road, son, and let me take my shot at goal\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chamberlain: \u201cHarry and I wouldn\u2019t find ourselves in a conversation like you and I do. Because we conduct ourselves a bit more orderly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyon: \u201cI\u2019ve heard you out on the ground. You are out of line.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chamberlain: \u201cI\u2019d tell him to take his kick. I was asked what I would do, Gary, and that is what I would\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyon: \u201cWe\u2019ll take it up next week, because that is just still grey. That\u2019s grey everywhere, there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chamberlain: \u201cYeah, there\u2019s a lot of subjectivity in the laws of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyon: \u201cWhen you\u2019ve got 30 seconds to take a shot at goal, you\u2019re entitled to take the 30.\u201d<\/p>\n
