{"id":727726,"date":"2026-06-10T16:22:21","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T16:22:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/727726\/"},"modified":"2026-06-10T16:22:21","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T16:22:21","slug":"jarrod-bleijie-defends-request-to-axe-more-than-500-affordable-homes-from-gold-coast-brisbane-developments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/727726\/","title":{"rendered":"Jarrod Bleijie defends request to axe more than 500 affordable homes from Gold Coast, Brisbane developments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Gold Coast mayor says the state government will have to guarantee more affordable homes to make up for the 550 lost from a new development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Labor opposition has called out Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie&#8217;s move to write to developers last month and request the removal of an affordable housing component from applications for two south-east Queensland developments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Bleijie directed developers to remove 550 low-cost homes from a 2,500 property development at Robina and Merrimac \u2014 which was approved on Tuesday \u2014 and 36 homes from a project at Lutwyche in Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Both developments are part of the state-facilitated development (SFD) program, with approval resting with the state instead of local council. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The program introduced by Labor previously required at least 15 per cent of homes to be affordable, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-20\/qld-development-approvals-affordable-housing\/106479034\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106479034\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a component that was dumped in March.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An artist's impression of the development at Robina.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/b4a9cbfc4c6b9df1e4e212a7c0b40ef6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Gold Coast development was approved by the state on Tuesday.\u00a0 (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a letter seen by the ABC, Walker Group Holdings wrote to the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning in response to a request to remove the affordable housing component from plans for the Gold Coast site.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Walker supports the requested change and confirms that the application has been amended to remove the minimum affordable housing requirement and reallocate those dwellings as standard market-rate housing,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If you&#8217;ve got affordable housing, whether they can buy it or you bring down the rent, at least we can get them out of cars.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would say more affordable housing peppered across our city would be much welcome.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Blejie defended the government&#8217;s decision to ditch mandates, saying increasing supply would lead to houses becoming more affordable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When you restrict, and you put mandates on builders and companies, you don&#8217;t get the results,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We want housing out of the ground. Affordability is going to happen with supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We need more supply in the market. We have far too much demand at the moment.
