She still holds The Ring Magazine’s lineal bantamweight title and has re-established herself as a leading contender, recently regaining the No 1 ranking on BoxRec and adding the interim WBC featherweight title to her resume.

For Johnson, the fight is about more than another defence. Victory would strengthen her claim as the outright best in the division and silence suggestions her undisputed status came about due to circumstance.

Johnson enters the bout as a two-division world champion. She previously held the IBF super bantamweight title in 2022 before losing it in 2023, and went on to claim the WBA bantamweight title in 2024 before unifying the division in 2025. She brings a record of 19 wins and two losses, with eight knockouts.

Thorslund, meanwhile, boasts an unblemished record of 24 wins, including nine by knockout, and has claimed world titles across three divisions. Since turning professional in 2017, she has held the WBO super bantamweight title, WBO bantamweight title and unified WBO and WBC bantamweight belts.

The matchup is shaping as one of the most evenly poised contests in women’s boxing, with both fighters of similar age, experience and physical attributes.

Johnson holds a slight height advantage, but analysts rate the bout a near even contest, with BoxRec giving Johnson a 48% chance of victory compared to Thorslund’s 44%.

The bout is expected to be broadcast live in New Zealand, continuing a run of major MVP boxing events shown on Sky Sport.

Benjamin Watt is a retired boxing judge and New Zealand boxing writer with a decade of experience. Watt has also been BoxRec’s New Zealand record-keeper since 2014.

Tauranga boxer Cherneka Johnson is preparing for the toughest test of her career, defending her undisputed world bantamweight…

[571
64,63,802,85
post-728086","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-boxing","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-boxing","tag-sports
["GET
