And it is, McKenna insists, absolutely grounded in the reality of life for many young Australians \u2013 in no small part because the central plot line actually happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was living in a share house in Fitzroy North with my cinematographer, Bonita Carzino, and one day our mutual friend burst through the front door with a tote bag full of cash,\u201d she relates. \u201cShe slumped down on our couch and told us she had spent the last few hours running around the CBD on the phone to people claiming they were from the ATO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McKenna became obsessed with the fact that her friend, who was \u201cvery smart and competent\u201d, had almost been scammed out of all her savings. She claims that when she started researching the topic she found young people are, contrary to the popular view, more often the victims of such scams than older people.<\/p>\n<p>And somehow, that seemed to dovetail with a general sense among her friendship group about how challenging the world has become.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Maddelin McKenna, who comes from a long line of creatives, roped her mother and brother into performing in her film.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6581503e67dd13594e0129185148ea6b384f33b5.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Maddelin McKenna, who comes from a long line of creatives, roped her mother and brother into performing in her film.Ruby Alexander<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was having a lot of conversations about the cost-of-living crisis and financial instability and job insecurity, and the ebb and flow of living with that. And I guess the feeling I wanted to get across in the film is the disorienting, chaotic, and propulsive nature of trying to exist in this stimulating world with all of those external pressures coming through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt like it might be the only time I\u2019m interested in dissecting my 20s,\u201d adds the writer-director, who turns 30 next month. \u201cAll the other film ideas I\u2019m writing are really not similar at all to this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mad Rush, in which <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/entertainment\/theatre\/on-the-very-stage-where-his-great-grandparents-met-a-star-is-born-20190503-p51jrr.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McKenna\u2019s actor brother William<\/a> (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and mother Michelle also appear, is among the titles announced today as part of the First Glance program for the 74th Melbourne International Film Festival, which was itself hit recently by a cyberattack.<\/p>\n<p>On May 31, MIFF sent an email to its subscriber database advising that the <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/victoria\/film-festival-customer-data-exposed-in-hack-of-third-party-ticketing-platform-20260531-p602k6.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">personal details of more than 26,000 customers had been accessed<\/a> by unauthorised persons. The festival claimed no financial data was exposed in the breach. On June 3, <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/victoria\/acmi-hit-with-data-breach-days-after-miff-s-ticketing-platform-hacked-20260604-p603yj.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ACMI\u2019s database was similarly hacked<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also announced in the First Glance line-up are a clutch of award-winning films from the Berlin and Cannes film festivals, including Rose, a tale of \u201cgender transgression\u201d in the 17th century, for which <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/movies\/how-sandra-h-ller-shocked-europe-and-became-the-toast-of-hollywood-20240112-p5ewvh.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sandra Huller<\/a> (Anatomy of a Fall, Hail Mary Project) won the Best Leading Performance award in Berlin; <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/movies\/he-was-close-to-death-when-russia-invaded-ukraine-this-film-is-his-response-20260601-p602rp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cannes Grand Prix winner Minotaur<\/a>, in which director Andrey Zvyagintsev ponders Putin\u2019s war on Ukraine through the prism of Claude Chabrol\u2019s 1969 movie The Unfaithful Wife; and I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning, a tale of five young friends in Birmingham, which won the Cannes Directors\u2019 Fortnight audience award.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Andrey Zvyagintsev on the set of Minotaur.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/fb32c831104cc997dee0e51ce0913a569b2e92dd.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Andrey Zvyagintsev on the set of Minotaur.<\/p>\n<p>There are also new films from Gus Van Sant (Dead Man\u2019s Wire, based on a real-life tale of a kidnapping that played out on live television), and mumblecore pioneer Joe Swanberg (The Sun Never Sets, a love triangle dramedy starring Dakota Fanning and New Girl stars Lamorne Morris and Jake Johnson).<\/p>\n<p>Among the Australian titles announced are documentaries about the indie band Jebediah; <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/movies\/was-this-the-best-aussie-summer-ever-this-filmmaker-thinks-so-20260605-p6044n.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Best Summer<\/a>, an account of the 1995 Summersault music festival, recorded by Tamra Davis while on tour with her husband, Mike D of the Beastie Boys but forgotten for 30 years; Digby &amp; Camille, a tender documentary portrait of artist Digby Webster and trainee chef Camille Collins, both of whom live with Down syndrome, as they attempt to forge their own path in life and love; and a premiere screening of <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/tv-and-radio\/tv-shows-we-can-t-wait-to-see-25-new-titles-and-10-returning-hits-to-keep-an-eye-out-for-20260608-p604rp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Airport Chaplain<\/a>, a new drama made for SBS starring Hugo Weaving, Claudia Karvan and The Pitt\u2019s Shabana Azeez.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/movies\/filmmaker-wins-landmark-case-to-be-acknowledged-as-principal-director-20260601-p602x1.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Stephen McCallum worked on the documentary Never Get Busted! for four years. He\u2019s spent the past two years fighting for the right to have that work acknowledged.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1781132595_677_45a5ccb4a191ca4daa2c66d02ed34c44279aaf6a.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There will also be event screenings of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, fully restored in 4k for its 25th anniversary, with writer-director-star <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/theatre\/harry-styles-hardly-john-cameron-mitchell-on-sex-punk-and-the-next-david-bowie-20260421-p5zptr.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Cameron Mitchell<\/a> in attendance, and a similarly pristine print of Memento, Christopher Nolan\u2019s debut feature, starring Guy Pearce as an amnesia-plagued investigator tracking down his wife\u2019s murderer, with a live score as part of the Hear My Eyes program.<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne International Film Festival runs from August 6 to 23. The full program will be announced on July 9.
