The tables have well and truly turned at Mercedes<\/a> and George Russell<\/a> is floundering. <\/p>\n

According to Formula 1<\/a> icon David Coulthard, the Briton may already be staring down the barrel of a future with \u201cno world championship\u201d. <\/p>\n

Russell will be scratching his head wondering where it all went wrong. Entering the 2026 season, he was the undisputed favourite to lead the Silver Arrows. <\/p>\n

Yet before he could even blink, his teenage teammate Kimi Antonelli<\/a> has snatched that honour right out from under him.<\/p>\n

Coulthard argued that if Russell does not find immediate success at the next race weekend in Barcelona<\/a>, he\u2019d be waving a chance at the world championship goodbye. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe needs to show he can take a pole in Barcelona, and assuming the car is quick enough, of course, he just needs to be beating Kimi,\u201d he said on the Up To Speed podcast. <\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s be honest. If he doesn\u2019t beat Kimi, it\u2019s over. No world championship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Podcast host Will Buxton agreed, pointing out that Mercedes currently boasts the best car on the grid and that Russell has been handed the golden opportunity he has always begged for. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou can say for as long as you want, \u2018All I need is the car. All I need is the opportunity\u2019,\u201d said Buxton. <\/p>\n

\u201cWell, guess what? You\u2019ve got the car. You\u2019ve got the opportunity. And you\u2019re having your arse handed to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following a dominant victory in the streets of Monte Carlo<\/a>, the 19-year-old Antonelli has surged to a commanding 66-point lead in the drivers\u2019 championship. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Russell has slumped to third in the standings, overtaken by his former teammate Lewis Hamilton<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The deficit between the two current Mercedes drivers now stands at 68 points.<\/p>\n

Monaco was a weekend to forget for Russell. <\/p>\n

Hit with an initial five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane<\/a>, he failed to serve it properly, triggering a subsequent 10-second drive-through penalty that effectively ruined his race on the notoriously hard-to-overtake circuit.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never had a run of bad luck like this. It didn\u2019t happen when the car was a P7 car two years ago, or a P4, P3 car last year. Now I\u2019ve got the car, it feels very painful, but there\u2019s a long way to go,\u201d bemoaned Russell. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just struggling to comprehend how on earth this season has panned out in the way it has.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t ever really believe in good luck or bad luck, but when I look at the season as a whole: leading the race in Canada – breakdown<\/a>. Could have been on the podium today – zero points. Leading the race in Japan (sic) \u2014 safety car came out 10 seconds after my pit stop,\u201d he further explained of his season so far. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole season could look totally different. Now I\u2019m 68 points off the lead.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not even 30 per cent of the way through, but there\u2019s a lot of points down the drain. It\u2019s not been very enjoyable.\u201d <\/p>\n

The paddock is also growing cynical. Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher issued a blunt warning to suggest that Russell is rapidly being relegated to a supporting role.<\/p>\n

\u201cA clear number two, which George Russell is developing into right now, would be perfect (for Antonelli and Toto Wolff<\/a>),\u201d said Schumacher. <\/p>\n

While Russell searches for answers, Antonelli hasn\u2019t wavered for a single weekend. <\/p>\n

The Italian prodigy is breaking records with vigor and showing no signs of slowing down<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Russell previously attempted to deflect pressure by claiming the championship was Antonelli\u2019s \u201cto lose\u201d, but the teenager isn\u2019t falling for the mind games.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not the first time we\u2019ve seen mind games. People always try to shift the pressure onto their opponent, whether it\u2019s an external rival or a team-mate \u2013 it doesn\u2019t make much difference. Fortunately, those things don\u2019t really affect me,\u201d Antonelli said to Motorsport.com. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re still only in the first third of the season, and I think it\u2019s definitely too early to start talking about a title showdown. I\u2019m working race by race.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal is to win as many races as possible and, as a consequence, the championship. I\u2019m aware that opportunities like this don\u2019t come along often, but at the same time I\u2019m still the underdog, and that\u2019s a position I don\u2019t mind,\u201d Antonelli said further.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore the season started, everyone saw George as the clear favourite, and I think that prediction was justified. He has the complete package required to fight for the title, including the experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think many people expected a start to the season like this, considering this is only my second year in Formula 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s possible that, together with my young age, this leads some people to believe there\u2019s still plenty of room for improvement. Maybe that\u2019s also why George sees me as a particularly dangerous rival in the fight for the world championship.\u201d<\/p>\n

The youngster\u2019s comments are a polite but firm refusal to sit in anyone\u2019s shadow. <\/p>\n
