Donald Trump<\/a> has told reporters that he loves \u201cthe inflation\u201d after new data released today showed a major surge in prices in the US.<\/p>\n

US inflation jumped to 4.2 per cent in May<\/a> compared to a year earlier. It is the worst month for inflation in three years.<\/p>\n

Trump was asked in the Oval Office<\/a> if he was concerned about the numbers.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I love it,\u201d he replied.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI love the inflation.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what I really love? I love the inflation thing. You know why?\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause as soon as this war is over. You know, I can say it now. Something you didn\u2019t know. <\/p>\n

\u201cDo you know we\u2019ve been taking out millions of barrels of oil. Nobody knows it. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou know who doesn\u2019t know about it? Iran until right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is hard to tell what Trump was trying to say.<\/p>\n

But Democrats have pounced on the president\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cDonald Trump has never bought his own groceries or filled up his own tank,\u201d Representative Diana DeGette said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course he \u2018loves inflation.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Senator Raphael Warnock<\/a> asked if Trump \u201ccould be any more out of touch?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s almost like this president is trying to make your life more expensive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

His comments come after another poorly received comment from Trump last month about the economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The president was asked by a reporter if he was motivated to make a deal with Iran<\/a> because of the financial situation of Americans<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot even a little bit,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing that matters when I\u2019m talking about Iran \u2014 they can\u2019t have a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think about Americans\u2019 financial situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think about anybody. I think about one thing: we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That\u2019s all.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Economic Policy Institute noted the latest inflation figures<\/a> have knocked real wages down to below what they were when Trump was inaugurated in January last year.<\/p>\n

Trump made curbing inflation a central part of his election campaign, criticising the Biden administration strongly on the issue.<\/p>\n

A major part of inflation worldwide stems from the price of oil<\/a>, which surged this morning after the Trump administration announced it would resume strikes on Iran.<\/p>\n

Prices of crude oil are up more than five per cent today.<\/p>\n
