Michael Maguire knows people will think he is “mad”, but the Broncos coach has declared the defending premiers are still “well and truly” alive in the title race.

It was the Broncos’ sixth loss in a row and leaves Maguire’s men in the bottom four entering next week’s bye.

While Brisbane won 10 of its last 12 games to secure a top-four berth last year, the Broncos are running out of time to go on a similar run this season.

A top-four finish already looks out of the picture, with Maguire’s men now facing an uphill battle to earn a spot in the finals. But Maguire is still confident.

“We’re still well and truly alive,” the Broncos coach said.

“People would probably think I’m mad. But one thing I do know (is) I’ve got a number of guys that are not on the field at this present moment.

“As a group we say we’re not going to use that as any sort of excuse or anything like that. But they’ll all come back and there’s a lot of quality there that I know can come back into the team.

“We’re in a bit of a tough situation at the moment. We’ll get those boys back at some stage and we all know what the team’s capable of doing.

“So once they get back and we’ve got to get through this little period now, which is tough for all of us. We don’t like going through it but it can also be the making of us.”

Broncos Biggest halftime deficit EVER! | 01:31

The Broncos appeared to lose two more players to injury on Thursday, with both Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam failing to finish the game while Jordan Riki also appeared to be playing through pain in his return from a foot injury.

Reynolds said he was only experiencing hamstring tightness and would be fine to play the Roosters after the bye, while Maguire said Mam had an AC joint issue but added he would need to speak to Broncos doctors to get further clarity on the injury.

Reynolds echoed Maguire’s confidence in Brisbane’s ability to turn its form around once near full-strength.

“We’ve got a lot of great players in our team. (We’re) just not executing at the moment, but when we do, we know what we’re capable of,” he said.

“I know we’ve got a lot of spirit and fight within the group. We’ll have a little break, get away and look to go again and reignite our season.”

Emotional Scenes as Arrow rings the bell | 02:26

While Maguire is expecting the Broncos to hit their stride later in the season, they are obviously against the clock to force their way into the top eight and having a full compliment of players will mean little if they produce an error-prone performance like the one on Thursday.

“We didn’t help ourselves,” Maguire admitted.

“We’re putting a lot of pressure on ourselves and that’s obviously coming from the opposition. But there’s obviously areas of our game that we need to be better at.

“It’s pretty simple. We had possession go against us and that comes from ourselves in many occasions. So we need to just need to be better.”

Michael Maguire knows people will think he is “mad”, but the Broncos coach has declared the defending premiers…

[568
64,63,761,762,158,85
post-729837","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nrl","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-national-rugby-league","tag-nationalrugbyleague","tag-nrl","tag-sports
["GET
