{"id":730176,"date":"2026-06-11T18:27:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T18:27:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/730176\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T18:27:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T18:27:17","slug":"new-sean-payton-contract-revealed-by-broncos-after-afc-championship-game-appearance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/730176\/","title":{"rendered":"New Sean Payton Contract Revealed by Broncos After AFC Championship Game Appearance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium css-1vqr2el\">Despite having two years remaining on his original contract with the Denver Broncos, Sean Payton has agreed to a new deal that will tie him to the club through the 2030 season. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium css-1vqr2el\">Payton and the Broncos agreed to terms on a new five-year contract extension after their appearance in the AFC Championship Game last season. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium css-1vqr2el\">ESPN&#8217;s <a class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-inherit MuiLink-root MuiLink-underlineAlways MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__ui__link__medium_strong css-lu48cp\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AdamSchefter\/status\/2065113556106768397\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Adam Schefter<\/a> first reported the news.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium css-1vqr2el\">The new deal for Payton lines up his contract with that of general manager George Paton, who signed a\u00a0<a class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-inherit MuiLink-root MuiLink-underlineAlways MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__ui__link__medium_strong css-lu48cp\" href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/25426194-george-paton-broncos-agree-new-5-year-contract-after-afc-title-game-run-division-title\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">five-year extension<\/a>\u00a0in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium css-1vqr2el\">Payton originally signed a five-year contract when he was hired by the Broncos in February 2023. It marked his return to the sidelines after a one-year sabbatical following his retirement from the New Orleans Saints after the 2021 season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium css-1vqr2el\">Since the Saints controlled Payton&#8217;s rights at that point, the Broncos\u00a0<a class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-inherit MuiLink-root MuiLink-underlineAlways MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__ui__link__medium_strong css-lu48cp\" href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10059798-report-sean-payton-to-become-broncos-hc-saints-get-2023-1st-round-pick-in-trade\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">traded<\/a>\u00a0a 2023 first-round draft pick and a 2024 second-round pick to New Orleans to release him from his contract.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium css-1vqr2el\">Denver was looking to make a big splash with its coaching hire after the disastrous 2022 season that saw Nathaniel Hackett get fired 15 games into his tenure after a 4-11 start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium css-1vqr2el\">The Broncos finished 2022 with a 5-12 record, their sixth consecutive losing season and seventh consecutive year missing the playoffs after a victory in Super Bowl 50.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium css-1vqr2el\">Payton helped stabilize things in Denver with an 8-9 record in his first season, but the full fruits of his efforts really took hold in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium css-1vqr2el\">The Broncos have gone 24-10 and made the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, including an appearance in the AFC Championship Game during the 2025 campaign.
