It’s rugby league’s ultimate Field of Dreams. Just like Ray Kinsella in the movie, Andrew Webster built a culture of belief from scratch, and an entire nation showed up — you can practically see the headlights lining up for miles down the highway.

Heading into this Round 15 blockbuster against the Sharks, the Warriors are sitting in second place, but the real value can’t be measured on any ladder.

As former Prime Minister Chris Hipkins noted, this team gives a country hope. It’s a full-blown cultural explosion, and the architect isn’t a local Kiwi hero.

It’s a red-headed kid from Sydney’s inner-west who grew up bleeding for Balmain — a bloke who took a club labelled as inconsistent and remade them in his own hard-working image.

Webster’s coaching journey didn’t begin with mystical voices whispering ‘If you build it, they will come.’

It started in the freezing cold of Yorkshire back in 2006, when he had the absolute bum out of his pants. With his playing career dead, he landed at Hull Kingston Rovers with nothing but a notebook.

The only reason he got a foot in the door was his brother, James, who was captaining the side and scored him an assistant and academy coaching gig. It was a brutal slog.

To survive on peanuts, Webby had to swallow his pride and do the real dirty work — coaching the kids by day, then working ground security and sweeping trash out of the frozen grandstands long after the fans had gone home.

It wasn’t a career launch; it was pure survival.

Get all the latest NRL news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. His real sliding door moment came over a decade later at Penrith under Ivan Cleary.

Spending those 2021 and 2022 premiership seasons side-by-side with Cleary rubbed off on him completely. You see it in the way they both handle the pressure cooker.

They share the same calm, unflappable temperament. In press conferences, there are no histrionics or hunting for headlines — they protect their players and keep the message simple.

The NRL is full of players who can compete with their bodies but switch their brains off. Somehow, during that time at Penrith, Cleary and Webster found the magic dust that helped players organise themselves and make decisions on the run.

Webby isn’t trying to copy Ivan; it’s just a fact of life that you become the sum of the people you associate with.

Greg ‘Brandy’ Alexander watched him closely during those premiership years and points directly to that level-headed temperament. He sees the exact same calm, relaxed presence in Webby that defines Cleary — no shouting, no screaming, and no loading extra pressure onto the players through his own ego.

He stays level, but the message hits clear as day.

Andrew Webster was an assistant coach to Ivan Cleary at Penrith. The people there embrace the game’s raw brutality and athleticism, but nothing catches fire across the Tasman quite like winning.

For too many years, the Warriors were a club trapped by their own potential and empty promises. Then COVID hit, striking their team and fanbase harder than anyone else in the game.

They spent over 1,000 days practically exiled in Australia, living out of bags in lockdown, isolated from their families and playing before borrowed crowds while the club’s very soul drifted away.

When the heavy losses mounted and the club hit rock bottom, Warriors CEO Cameron George didn’t need to guess who could fix it. He remembered a sharp, young assistant coach who had worked under Andrew McFadden at the club back in 2015 and 2016.

George knew Webby already understood the unique DNA of the club and the country — and that history is exactly why he made the call to bring him back as the boss. George later revealed that while most rookie coaches arrive wanting to tear the joint down and change everything, Webby walked in, looked at the roster, and said: “I’m happy with the squad we’ve got.” That laid the baseline of trust right there.

Former Penrith assistant coach Andrew Webster has been a revelation. Credit: NRL Images.Source: The Daily Telegraph

That move started the Wah drums beating. The club made another crucial shift by bringing McFadden back to run recruitment and pathways. McFadden had already coached the club and knew how much local talent was being poached by Australian sides.

Together, he and Webster locked down their own backyard. Instead of chasing outside signings, McFadden focused on hoarding the best schoolboy talent in New Zealand. It changed everything. By building elite local pathways, they didn’t just fix the first-grade team — they secured the club’s long-term future.

A Round 14 bye came at the perfect time to reset after a brutal, blow-for-blow battle with the Panthers in Round 13.

Even in that tight loss, the Warriors proved they can match the benchmark.

Walsh pays tribute to Jai Arrow | 00:51

Their style works in the 2026 version of the game, and a +154 points differential shows they compete on both sides of the ball. Now sitting in second place, they head into a massive fortnight at home against the Sharks and Cowboys.

The Sharks, who just took care of business against the Dragons while the Warriors rested up, are one of the few teams to get a win over New Zealand earlier this season. It adds a beautiful layer of spite to Saturday night.

You get the feeling there will be plenty more wins to come, more drums, and more sellouts for the Wahs.

One thing is for certain — the fans are making the most of it. As Moonlight Graham said in Field of Dreams: “We just don’t recognise life’s most significant moments while they are happening.”

But out in Auckland’s inner east, the locals know exactly what they’re witnessing. And they have a red-headed kid from Balmain to thank for it.

Can the Warriors continue their winning ways under Webster this week?
