Hudson Young wises up by the interview’s end.

“Don’t make me look like some weirdo doing drills at the park on my own, mate.”

"EnforcerEnforcer from a bygone era: The magic and madness of Hudson Young.Steven Siewert

Don’t threaten us with a good time, Hudson.

But running tedious rugby league drills – overs and unders, blocks, reverse blocks, fake blocks and any other blocks you care to name – would be doing one of the game’s most entertaining and inventive forwards a gross disservice, anyway.

The first seeds of Young’s magnificent madness – the grubbers and chip kicks for himself and teammates, the flicks, the offloads, the passes between his legs – were sown in the Hunter as a four-year-old running around for the Greta Branxton Colts.

Two decades later, the NSW Origin back-rower can still be found at Giralang Oval in Canberra’s inner-north – not as some weirdo running drills on his own.

“But I do walk the dog down there and kick the footy around,” he laughs. “I grew up across the road from an oval and every day I was out there like any other kid, playing footy, practicing kicks, commentating myself and pretending I was this player and that.

“I still love mucking around with the ball, thinking about a few things, and I still love everything about the game.”

In a modern game that has lurched from being suffocated in structure to run ragged by set-restarts, Young is a throwback to back-rowers of a bygone era.

A small selection of landmark plays have him swinging from Canberra’s left edge to chip for right-side winger Xavier Savage to fly over against Manly.

Running 90 metres for a match-winner against the Dragons after a one-on-one strip under his own goalposts.

Throwing flick passes galore against the Titans in 2022 and knocking off the Sea Eagles and Bulldogs in consecutive weeks with match-winning plays last year.

There are the two eye-gouging charges from 2019, of course, and the regular close-sailing of a top-shelf NRL enforcer, too, because what’s all that magic without a little madness?

“Wade Graham is the comparison who springs to mind for me,” Blues coach Laurie Daley says. “He’s tough, knows when to carry, knows when to pass and kick. Wade was one of the smartest players in the game during his career and I think that gets underestimated in Hudson’s game.

“He popped up on the right for us in game one a couple of times and isn’t shy to roam. We played him in the middle last year. He’s just someone I think you have to let play, you can’t pigeonhole him as left or right”.

Along with Graham, the former Cronulla captain, shades of the brilliant, brutal play of British forward Brian Lockwood emerge in Young’s approach to the game.

"HudsonHudson Young as a four-year-old Greta Baxton Colts junior.Instagram hudsonyoung_

So too a collection of old Bulldogs back-rowers, from Graeme Hughes to Jim Dymock and Jason Smith, a pair of ‘Picassos’ when it came to short-side plays in Andrew Johns’s eyes.

Former Raiders assistant Mick Crawley hinted at the footballing smarts Daley spoke of in a Fox Sports column this week on Young, writing; “He will roll up bold as brass at training and shout, ‘Hey Creep, I saw the opposition fullback for the coming game getting caught on the long side. I was thinking of chipping for myself and catching him out’.”

Midweek war-gaming around Young works both ways, Blues teammate and Roosters leader Victor Radley reports.

“We just played the Raiders [and emerged with a critical 26-0 win] and a massive part of our week was preparing to handle Hudson,” he says.

“Defensively, not giving him any cues that he could pick up and try something with. Canberra’s got a lot of those unpredictable players, so the focus is defending especially strong as a unit.

“Not trying to stop someone on your own. Because trying to rush or solve a player like Hudson solo, he’s got the skills to beat you.”

In lime green, Young fits the mould of a Raiders attack that seeks to break it, with Ricky Stuart encouraging their ad-lib approach.

Young adores his coach for the philosophy that has helped lift him to the game’s elite level, along with “plenty of sprays if I push things too far”.

The NSW game-breaker turned 28 on Thursday and will start game two in Melbourne after playing his seventh Origin last month – the first 80-minute outing of his career and easily the best he has looked in sky blue.

Young scored NSW’s opening try from a Nathan Cleary grubber. He shifted play wide on the first tackle for Stephen Crichton and Ethan Strange to slingshot the Blues downfield for the latter’s game-turning four-pointer.

As Daley noted, he roamed from his left edge to the right too, and critically as Young explains, his 44 tackles topped the count in the last-gasp game one win.

“I rely a lot on my fitness and I pride myself on not missing any moments in the game,” Young says.

“I think players can get really set in certain positions and not leaving that position or role. I might see the game a bit differently, if I see something or an opportunity, I go after it. It’s just the way that I’ve always played.

“But if I do roam to the other side or chase a certain play, I have to get back to my edge, or get set for defence. You can’t just go rogue and then let your teammate down.

“Then coming into Origin and starting at this level, I’ve built confidence and skills to make an impact. Sticky [Stuart] is a big part of that. He backs his players to do their thing.

“And then when I come into camp and come into Origin games, you build those combinations up with guys over time. You understand each other’s strengths and how we play together.”
