PORT COACH TAKES DIG AT RIVALS OVER BUTTERS COMMENTS<\/p>\n
Josh Carr has hit out at rival coaches\u2019 tendency to publicly discuss restricted free agent Zak Butters\u2019 future. <\/p>\n
It comes after Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge this week remarked about the romanticism associated with Butters playing for his childhood club, the Dogs, who\u2019ve been linked strongest to acquiring him this offseason. <\/p>\n
\u201cZak\u2019s a unique one, because Zak was a really keen Bulldogs supporter as a kid, and he had Brad Johnson\u2019s No.6 on his back as a junior \u2026 there\u2019s a romance there for the club, and we like to think (for) Zak, so Marcus (Bontempelli), and some of Marcus\u2019 teammates are quite naturally drawn to Zak,\u201d Beveridge said on Wednesday. <\/p>\n
In turn, during his weekly press conference on Friday, Port Adelaide coach Carr took the opportunity to point out others\u2019 willingness to discuss pursuits of his star player, who continues to ponder over his free agency call. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m probably a little bit different than some coaches,\u201d Carr told reporters on Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose conversations, if I do have them, you guys (the media) won\u2019t know about (them).<\/p>\n
\u201cI always love when a coach starts with \u2018I don\u2019t really like talking about other clubs\u2019 players\u2019, but then go for four-and-a-half, five minutes in talking about it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m different to that and … you\u2019re talking about Bevo\u2019s conversations and media that he did and, yeah, I would tackle it a bit differently.\u201d<\/p>\n
ROSS HITS OUT AT AFL MANDATE<\/p>\n
St Kilda coach Ross Lyon is pushing back on the AFL\u2019s injury disclosure mandate after yet another line of questioning about star forward Max King.<\/p>\n
King has not played since Round 17, 2024, enduring a slew of knee and soft-tissue setbacks across the past two seasons.<\/p>\n
The 25-year-old has spent the most recent part of his rehabilitation on the Gold Coast and is listed as 1-2 weeks away on the club website. <\/p>\n
AFL clubs are required to publish injury updates each Tuesday, but Lyon said a return from injury was never \u201cas rigid as everyone likes to think it is\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs he (1-2 weeks away)? To be honest, I don\u2019t dive into it. Ideally, clubs don\u2019t have to do it, it\u2019s sort of mandated,\u201d Lyon said of the injury list.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you think rehab is an exact science and websites are exactly accurate, then we\u2019re all living in a fool\u2019s paradise because even our experts can\u2019t tell us exactly when.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m like you guys, \u2018When?\u2019 They go, \u2018Four to six, one to two, hit milestones\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut it\u2019s really simple, you either hit milestones and keep progressing, or you miss them.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou could miss one running band of high-speed sprints, and they work on 5 per cent progressions, and he pulls back a week.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not as rigid as everyone likes to think it is. I think if you\u2019re using that as an access point to keep clubs accountable, I think you\u2019ve got it wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lyon said there was \u201cnothing sinister\u201d in King\u2019s time interstate, confirming it\u2019s a circuit breaker from what he describes as \u201cthe circus\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just an internal process, part of his rehab (and) a change of environment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis brother is up there, so some little nourishment and connection for him there, get him away from the circus, probably, to be fair and freshen him up.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think clearly (it\u2019s a circuit breaker), he feels good. I\u2019ve spoken to him \u2013 he\u2019s rehabbing, again, nothing sinister.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s going to play a lot of great footy for the Saints, it\u2019s just a matter of time.\u201d<\/p>\n
St Kilda takes on GWS this Sunday, clashing with the Socceroos\u2019 World Cup opener with T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>\n
Lyon, in true style, closed his press conference with a one-liner after being asked if there was any correspondence with the AFL about a fixture reschedule.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, we\u2019re 9am at Surrey Hills. The AFL system, mate, we\u2019re here, we\u2019re standing up (and) our fans will be there.
