Wednesday\u2019s walk-off win gave the Padres their first series win since May 22-24 against the Athletics. They are eight games behind the Dodgers in the division and in possession of the NL\u2019s third wild-card spot, 1\u00bd games behind the Phillies and one game up on the Nationals, Pirates and Cubs.<\/p>\n
Baltimore Orioles (33-37, 4th in AL East)<\/p>\n
The Orioles have won two in a row and five of 10, but they are 9\u00bd games off the Rays\u2019 and Yankees\u2019 pace in the division and two games out of the AL\u2019s last wild-card spot. The Orioles swept the Padres last year in San Diego even after trading away Ram\u00f3n Laureano and Ryan O\u2019Hearn at the deadline. They won 101 games in 2023, 91 in 2025, slipped to 75 last year and remain firmly under .500 to start this season.<\/p>\n

San Diego: C Freddy Fermin has three of the team\u2019s seven homers in June and leads the team with seven RBIs and a 1.052 OPS. Three Padres have an OPS under .500 this month\u20141B Gavin Sheets (.464), 3B Manny Machado (.459) and SS Xander Bogaerts (.405).<\/p>\n
Baltimore: 1B Pete Alonso leads the Orioles with four homers in June (.908 OPS) and OF Colton Cowser (.822 OPS in June) and 3B Coby Mayo (.712) both have three homers this month. C Adley Rutschman leads the team with 10 RBIs this month (1.131 OPS). Padres RHP Griffin Canning (0-4, 6.34 ERA)\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0 He\u2019d allowed an 8.34 ERA over five starts before limiting the Mets to a run on three hits and two walks in five innings on Saturday in a no-decision. His six strikeouts in that game were one shy of a season high. Canning has allowed nine runs in 6\u2154 innings in his two road starts so far. He has a 9.49 in 24\u2154 career innings against the Orioles, including two starts in 2024 (10 IP, 8 ER).<\/p>\n
Orioles RHP Shane Baz (3-6, 4.09 ERA)\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0 He\u2019s allowed two earned runs or fewer over his last four starts (1.75 ERA), although four unearned runs scored in his last start, a loss. Baz has won both of his career starts against the Padres, the last in 2025, when he struck out six over seven shutout innings for the Rays.<\/p>\n
