The European Commission is stepping up the implementation of the EU\u2019s Bioeconomy Strategy<\/a> by launching three complementary initiatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This includes the Bio-based Europe Alliance (BEA) to support market scale-up, the Bioeconomy Investment Deployment Group (BIDG) to improve access to finance, and the Expert Group on Bioeconomy to support implementation by Member States.<\/p>\n

Call for alliance members\u00a0<\/p>\n

As part of this, a new call for expression of interest<\/a> to participate in the BEA was launched today (10 June). It aims to address gaps across the value chain that prevent companies from scaling up and reaching full market deployment of bio-based materials and products.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The initiative responds to a longstanding challenge facing Europe’s bio-based sector. While significant public and private investment has supported research, innovation and demonstration activities, many promising companies in the biobased sector continue to struggle to reach the commercial phase.<\/p>\n

As a result, innovative European startups are often acquired by non-European investors before reaching full industrial deployment, with economic value and strategic know-how leaving Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With a mission to mobilise \u20ac10 billion in corporate offtake commitments by 2030, the Alliance will connect producers of bio-based materials, products and technologies with major European buyers, helping to create the predictable demand signals needed to unlock investment and bring innovative solutions to commercial scale.<\/p>\n

The BEA will act as a powerful tool for European strategic autonomy by promoting ‘Made in the EU’ products. Furthermore, it offers buyers high visibility as frontrunners in scaling up the bio-based industry.<\/p>\n

Interested organisations are invited to submit their interest in becoming founding members of the Alliance ahead of its official launch on 20\u201321 October 2026 during the Global Bioeconomy Summit in Dublin, Ireland.<\/a><\/p>\n

Any expression of interest<\/a> should be submitted by 31 July through the confirmation of interest form<\/a> and sent to ENV-BIOECONOMY-STRATEGY\"at\"ec [dot] europa [dot] eu (ENV-BIOECONOMY-STRATEGY[at]ec[dot]europa[dot]eu).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Submitting an expression of interest does not guarantee membership in the Bio-based Europe Alliance. Formal invitations will follow a review process.\u00a0<\/p>\n

First BIDG & expert group meetings<\/p>\n

The Bioeconomy Investment Deployment Group<\/a> is also holding its first meeting today, marking the start of a new joint initiative of the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking<\/a> (CBE JU) and the Commission to strengthen financing for Europe\u2019s bio-based industries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The group brings together commercial banks, national promotional banks, venture capital funds and institutional investors to increase the financial sector\u2019s awareness of bioeconomy opportunities and mobilise public and private investments to scale up bio-based industries.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In parallel, the Commission has established an Expert Group on Bioeconomy<\/a> to support the implementation of the EU Bioeconomy Strategy.<\/p>\n

The group will serve as a key platform for Member States to assist the Commission in implementing the Strategy, receive updates on bioeconomy-related activities, contribute to Member States’ monitoring progress and support the development of national and regional bioeconomy strategies.<\/p>\n

Stakeholders from industry and civil society will participate as observers, ensuring a broad range of perspectives. The first meeting of the Expert Group will take place on 12 June in Brussels.\u00a0<\/p>\n
