Its collaborative approach will unite\u00a0expertise\u00a0across disciplines and accelerate the translation of promising\u00a0pre-clinical\u00a0discoveries into clinical evaluation.\u00a0The center\u00a0will also support the development of both genetic and cellular therapies designed to address congenital and\u00a0acquired\u00a0conditions throughout the body.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Malcom Brenner is a pioneer in the field of cell and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/health\/What-is-Gene-Therapy.aspx\" class=\"linked-term\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gene therapy<\/a> and is uniquely qualified to lead\u00a0Houston Methodist&#8217;s research efforts in this field. His vision and leadership will play\u00a0a\u00a0pivotal\u00a0role in advancing\u00a0our work in this\u00a0space.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Jenny Chang, president and CEO, Houston Methodist Academic Institute<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Brenner, the\u00a0center will\u00a0house\u00a0a team of\u00a0translational research scientists,\u00a0physician-scientists,\u00a0and\u00a0support staff.\u00a0Brenner and team will continue\u00a0their long-term\u00a0collaborations at\u00a0Baylor College of Medicine\u00a0and\u00a0Texas Children&#8217;s Hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brenner, a professor of pediatrics, medicine, molecular and human\u00a0genetics\u00a0and translational biology at Baylor College of Medicine, is\u00a0known for\u00a0his foundational contributions to cell and gene therapy as\u00a0viable\u00a0clinical treatments. Trained as a physician-scientist in immunology and hematology, he helped redefine bone marrow transplantation as a form of cell therapy and was among the first to show that engineered immune cells could safely and effectively treat infection and cancer. His research\u00a0established\u00a0the clinical potential of virus-specific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/health\/What-are-T-Cells.aspx\" class=\"linked-term\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">T cells<\/a> and gene-modified hematopoietic stem cells, laying the groundwork for therapies that provide durable, and in some cases lifelong,\u00a0benefits\u00a0for patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beyond his scientific discoveries, Brenner has played a key role in shaping the global infrastructure for cell and gene therapy research.\u00a0A leader\u00a0in major scientific societies and an architect of early standards for the field, he\u00a0helped\u00a0guide how these complex therapies are developed,\u00a0regulated\u00a0and delivered.\u00a0Elected\u00a0to\u00a0the National Academy of Medicine\u00a0and\u00a0National\u00a0Academy of Inventors, Brenner has received\u00a0numerous\u00a0honors recognizing his scientific impact and mentorship.
