(ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last month, former Liberal minister Madeleine Ogilvie resigned from cabinet following accusations <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-30\/madeleine-ogilvie-backbench-accusations-of-misleading-parliament\/106741156\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106741156\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she misled parliament<\/a> on her involvement in a Supreme Court action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Speaking at the time, Ms Ogilvie said she made the decision to move to the backbench in a choice &#8220;between upholding legal obligations to the court or providing the Greens with information to which they are not entitled&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Greens and Labor believe Ms Howlett, too, should either resign or be sacked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In Labor&#8217;s view, public confidence and trust in Minister Howlett has been eroded by her failure to provide answers to the serious questions surrounding her conduct,&#8221; Labor leader Josh Willie said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Minister Howlett&#8217;s position in Cabinet is untenable while she refuses to answer basic questions abut a secret legal matter funded by Tasmanian taxpayers,&#8221;  he said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A blonde politician at a press conference.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1781428691_564_dc747f020aec95ad8c98e0ee04c79b3e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Madeleine Ogilvie has stepped back from the ministry. What could happen when parliament returns?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But government minister Nick Duigan said the two cases were not the same.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What we&#8217;re seeing here is Labor \u2026 and the Greens trying to muddy the waters and trying to draw a line between these two things, where there is in fact a substantial difference,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The premier says he&#8217;s not prepared to make any statements about these things publicly or in parliament, statements that may be unlawful. We need to be respectful of the legal process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Both Mr Willie and Dr Woodruff have reminded the chamber that ministers are bound by integrity standards outlined in the Ministerial Code of Conduct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a letter, Premier Jeremy Rockliff responded to Mr Willie&#8217;s claim, saying Ms Howlett continued to abide by the code of conduct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You further claim that I possess detailed knowledge of the matters you describe and imply that this knowledge should be publicly disclosed,&#8221; Mr Rockliff wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This misunderstands both the nature of approvals for legal expenditure and the conventions that appropriately limit the sharing of sensitive information. Decisions are made in accordance with established processes and advice, not on the basis of political considerations or commentary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Cabinet can choose to approve legal indemnity for legal matters that ministers face in their roles.<\/p>\n<p>Rockliff should seek &#8216;legal advice&#8217; for transparency, Greens say<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Woodruff has urged the premier \u2014 who has frequently said he cannot comment on the legal matters \u2014 to seek advice from the solicitor-general on what he can and cannot say about his ministers&#8217; legal matters in the interest of providing transparency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Premier Rockliff has repeatedly called the matter &#8220;complex&#8221;, citing a suppression order on Ms Ogilvie&#8217;s Supreme Court action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Would it be a legal issue if he said within which portfolio these proceedings relate?
