Wet road conditions played a role in the death of young Australian sprinter Jemma Stapleton<\/a> in Thailand, according to reports in local media.<\/p>\n

The 25-year-old rising star and former Stawell Gift finalist was killed last week while on holiday with her family. <\/p>\n

She was riding a motorcycle along a curve on a highway in Bo Phut, Koh Samui, on Wednesday afternoon when it reportedly slid out and she was thrown along the road.<\/p>\n

Local police chief Maj Suwat Suksri said wet and slippery conditions appear to have been a factor in the deadly incident between Ms Stapleton\u2019s motorcycle and two other cars. <\/p>\n

It had been raining at the time, and the motorcycle slid into a lane of oncoming traffic, the Bangkok Post<\/a> reported. <\/p>\n

Jemma had been ahead of a number of family members, who were travelling behind on other motorcycles, according to the report.<\/p>\n

The star runner\u2019s brother led tributes, writing on Instagram: \u201cRest in peace. I love you so so much. I promise I\u2019ll make you proud. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou were the best sister and my best friend I\u2019ll forever miss you\u201d.<\/p>\n

In an Instagram post, the Victorian Athletic League described Jemma as a \u201cvalued member of our community\u201d whose \u201cpresence, character and contribution left a lasting impact on those around her\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of everyone at the Victorian Athletic League, we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Jemma.\u201d<\/p>\n

A GoFundMe started on behalf of the family to help bring Jemma\u2019s body home raised over $100,000 in less than 24 hours.<\/p>\n

It has since been closed with the organiser thanking everyone for their love and support.<\/p>\n

\u201cJemma would have been absolutely overwhelmed to see her community come together in this way \u2014 it is a true reflection of the beautiful person she was,\u201d their post read.<\/p>\n

Knox Little Athletics said it was \u201cdeeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Jemma Stapleton while overseas on a family holiday\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cJemma was a valued member of the Knox Little Athletics community, competing as a Little Athlete with the Rowville Club,\u201d the organisation said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom an early age, she showed great talent, determination, and a genuine love for athletics, achieving success at the Knox Championship level and later representing Knox at the state level.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rowville Netball Club said: \u201cThere are no words that can truly ease the pain being felt by those who loved her. On behalf of everyone at Rowville Netball Club, we extend our deepest condolences to the Stapleton family during this incredibly difficult time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope they can find comfort in the love and support surrounding them and in the many memories shared with Jemma.<\/p>\n

\u201cJemma will always be remembered as part of our Rowville Netball Club family, and our thoughts are with all who are grieving this tragic loss.
