The Eagles\u2019 spearhead squandered his set-shot chance to win the game in the waning moments, but several examples of \u201cgiving metres when you shouldn\u2019t\u201d left dual North Melbourne premiership player David King flummoxed. <\/p>\n
King said the way Logue defended Jake Waterman allowed the Eagle \u201cluxuries you don\u2019t get anywhere else\u201d. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe sort of guards him, and then rolls off at the wrong time every time – it\u2019s almost comical,\u201d he said on Fox Footy\u2019s First Crack. <\/p>\n
\u201cAll of a sudden, he\u2019s on the lead, going with him, going with him, guard the lead – good, big tick – (but) now what are you doing (as Logue in one example drops off Waterman, who then freely retreats back towards goal)?<\/p>\n
\u201cWho\u2019s covering him now? Is it meant to be the player in behind, or are you meant to be one-on-one? Mark inside 50. <\/p>\n
\u201cSo, there\u2019s just times where you give metres when you shouldn\u2019t, and you don\u2019t clamp when you should \u2026 it\u2019s the wrong way around. He never really has location or contain at all, there (in an example on the half-forward flank).\u201d<\/p>\n

Another piece of vision showed Logue play roughly 20 metres off Waterman inside 50 while the ball was on the wing and heading towards the Roos\u2019 goal. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis is exactly the same. As soon as Waterman retreats, he retreats,\u201d King continued. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe ball\u2019s coming towards him – you\u2019ve got to get some physicality. Right there, he should be body-on-body, back shoulder. It\u2019s an uncontested mark in your forward-50. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n
But it was an example from the dying stages of the game, which saw Waterman get free to mark virtually uncontested in the middle of the forward 50, that particularly grated King. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are you doing? Where are you going? The game\u2019s on the line, and he\u2019s free 20 metres out in the corridor,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd you think: \u2018My god, how is this happening?\u2019 You wonder why they\u2019ve been poor defensively for the last five years. How is this still a problem to this level?<\/p>\n
\u201cI reckon they\u2019ve changed the mechanics of their defence three times in two years, and there\u2019s still glaring problems.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fortunately for North Melbourne, Waterman\u2019s shot at goal cannoned into the post, allowing the hosts to narrowly prevail. <\/p>\n
Probed on whether Alastair Clarkson should consider a different defender at selection, King said: \u201cIt can\u2019t just be the player (at fault). There has to be some sort of instruction there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dual All-Australian Leigh Montagna, though, pointed to Logue\u2019s reaction time. <\/p>\n
\u201cYou watch Geelong – they are proactive defenders. He\u2019s a reactive defender – he makes his decision after the ball\u2019s been kicked, and it\u2019s too late,\u201d Montagna said. <\/p>\n
\u201cSo, I just don\u2019t think he\u2019s got the mindset, sharpness and decision-making to be able to play that sort of role as a defender.\u201d<\/p>\n
