But there are three reasons why they\u2019re not visiting us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/new-ufo-files-offer-no-answers-but-something-is-happening-in-the-skies-282608\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent release<\/a> of hundreds of previously classified Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs) cases spanning the 1940s to the present, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lsi-eDgCt-E\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the new Steven Spielberg movie<\/a>, Disclosure Day, about extraterrestrial life, has fuelled the idea that aliens are visiting Earth. <\/p>\n<p>In fact, polls in <a href=\"https:\/\/lonerganresearch.com.au\/lonergan\/boldy-going-where-1-in-10-aussies-have-previously-witnessing-a-ufo-that-is%3C\/u\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.com\/en-us\/articles\/53486-half-of-americans-believe-aliens-have-visited-earth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/ranked-the-countries-that-believe-in-aliens-the-most\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">elsewhere<\/a> indicate around a third of the public believes aliens are here. <\/p>\n<p>However, while what we know about the universe suggests aliens may exist, there are three compelling reasons why they probably aren\u2019t visiting us.<\/p>\n<p>Space is big \u2013 very big<\/p>\n<p>To begin with, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/science-research\/astrophysics\/how-big-is-space-we-asked-a-nasa-expert-episode-61\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space is vast<\/a> \u2013 beyond our imagination. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/About_Us\/ESAC\/Proxima_Centauri_our_nearest_neighbour\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Proxima Centauri<\/a>, the nearest star to our Sun, is about 40 trillion kilometres away, 268,000 times farther than the Sun is from Earth. That\u2019s 4.3 light years as astronomers measure it. A light year is the distance light travels in one year at 300,000km per second. <\/p>\n<p>We can only travel across space at a fraction of the speed of light with current technology. Even our fastest spacecraft, the <a href=\"https:\/\/parkersolarprobe.jhuapl.edu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Parker Solar Probe<\/a>, travels at a top speed of roughly 191 kilometres per second \u2013 0.064% the speed of light. <\/p>\n<p>At that speed, it would take about 6,650 years to reach Proxima Centauri, and that\u2019s just in our local stellar neighbourhood. So interstellar travel within human lifespans would require much higher velocities.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s assume we did have the means to travel close to the speed of light. That introduces the first problem with travelling at that velocity. Albert Einstein demonstrated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/everything-really-relative\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">time is relative<\/a>; the rate of time flow is not the same everywhere in the universe. The faster a spaceship travels from Earth, the slower time will pass for its passengers. This is called time dilation.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when NASA astronaut Scott Kelly arrived back on Earth from a year on the International Space Station, he was milliseconds younger than his <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11336052\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">identical twin<\/a> because time moves more slowly for objects in motion, and the International Space Station <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/international-space-station\/space-station-facts-and-figures\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">travels<\/a> at roughly 28,150 kilometres per hour.<\/p>\n<p>This difference was negligible for the Kelly twins. But for any aliens cartwheeling through our skies, it would be significantly more because of the journey to Earth and back from a distant star system at a necessarily higher speed. They would go home to a planet much older than the one they left \u2013 perhaps by a century or more. They would be time exiles. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/741451\/original\/file-20260612-72-2r4iec.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A grey, lunar surface with three colourful dots visible in the sky.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1781489469_75_file-20260612-72-2r4iec.jpg\"  \/><\/a>&#13;<br \/>\n            &#13;<br \/>\n              A photograph from the Apollo 17 mission in December 1972.&#13;<br \/>\n              <a class=\"source\" href=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/UFO\/?type=.img#NASA-UAP-VM006-Apollo-17-1972\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>&#13;<br \/>\n            &#13;<\/p>\n<p>Unimaginably high energy requirements<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the unimaginably high energy requirement for interstellar travel. <\/p>\n<p>The mass of the spaceship increases with velocity, so an <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.libretexts.org\/Bookshelves\/Modern_Physics\/Spiral_Modern_Physics_(D&#039;Alessandris)\/2%3A_The_Special_Theory_of_Relativity_-_Dynamics\/2.4%3A_Interstellar_Travel_%E2%80%93_Energy_Issues_(Project)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increasing amount of energy<\/a> is required to accelerate it. <\/p>\n<p>At the speed of light, the ship becomes infinitely massive, requiring an infinite amount of energy. This is clearly impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Another significant issue is that space is a vacuum \u2013 but not completely. There are just enough <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.4236\/ns.2012.410099\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">particles to worry<\/a> about. They can potentially cause fatal radiation for passengers and the instruments of a high velocity spacecraft, or destroy it. Sparsely spread hydrogen atoms turn into intense radiation at near light speed, and the heat that is generated would ablate and eventually destroy the hull.<\/p>\n<p>Faster-than-light travel, according to physicist Miguel Alcubierre, is possible, but it comes with its own <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2017-01-alcubierre-warp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set of issues<\/a> and a currently impossible energy requirement. <\/p>\n<p>That raises the question of why spend all this energy to travel to Earth? Anything we have, an advanced civilisation (as they would have to be to get here) would be able to make on their planet.<\/p>\n<p>A unique biosphere<\/p>\n<p>Yet another issue is our biosphere, unique to Earth as far as scientists know. <\/p>\n<p>Life and the planet co-evolved. Complex life would not exist on Earth if cyanobacteria, a type of single-celled microbe, had not <a href=\"https:\/\/astrobiology.nasa.gov\/news\/revisiting-earths-oxygenation-24-billion-years-ago\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pumped oxygen<\/a> into our mostly nitrogen atmosphere 2.4 billion years ago. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s therefore not toxic for us, but oxygen is reactive and could be highly corrosive for aliens. And while they could wear protective suits like humans do when going to inhospitable environments, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grey_alien\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nordic_aliens\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">visiting aliens<\/a> do not include any descriptions of spacesuits.<\/p>\n<p>So, are aliens out there?<\/p>\n<p>If aliens are not here, are they out there? <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an interesting question, scientifically and philosophically. Scientists do not have enough information yet, but they are working on the question.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/exoplanets\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">About 6,200 exoplanets<\/a> have been found in more than 4,700 solar systems, though none are like Earth or our Solar System. <\/p>\n<p>Most stars could have at least one planet, and there are <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/universe\/stars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than 100 billion stars<\/a> in our galaxy alone. The number of planets is therefore astronomical, and some may be habitable. <\/p>\n<p>Closer to home, there are worlds with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/best-places-find-life-solar-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">potential for microbial life<\/a> either past or present \u2013 Mars, Europa (a moon of Jupiter), and Enceladus and Titan (moons of Saturn). If we discover life began twice in our Solar System, that will increase the odds of life elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seti.org\/research\/seti-101\/project-ozma\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Since 1960<\/a>, we\u2019ve had the capability to look for intelligence elsewhere, piggybacking on normal radio astronomy. The biggest search for alien life projects are carried out by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seti.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SETI Institute<\/a> in California and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physics.ox.ac.uk\/research\/group\/breakthrough-listen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Breakthrough Listen<\/a> project based at Oxford University in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing has been found across all the searches made.
