As suited and booted Socceroos stepped off the bus in Vancouver and towards a 2-0 victory against Turkey<\/a>, many dangled designer pouches. Tete Yengi and Mo Tour\u00e9 carried what appeared to be Goyard, the it-bag of choice for athletes world wide<\/a>. Burberry checks and monograms from Louis Vuitton and Dior were also spotted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve come a long way from a Country Road bag on the side of the field,\u201d said Benjamen Judd, Esquire Australia\u2019s head of content.<\/p>\n

The Socceroos\u2019 suits were from Australian tailoring brand MJ Bale, but the luxury bags were \u201ctheir own flair\u201d, said Susie Thompson, partnerships and communications manager at MJ Bale.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou see some of the overseas basketball teams and they have their \u2018tunnel moments\u2019 in designer wear,\u201d Thompson said, referring to the pregame walk that has become the catwalk of sports.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s an element of that emulating through international sport, and having their \u2018moment\u2019 arriving, and I think they\u2019ve accessorised accordingly, which is kind of cool.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re pretty proud to sit there with international luxury brands.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judd said lately football is beginning to rival the NBA\u2019s long-established fashion chops<\/a>. Players, fans and brands alike have \u201cleaned into the boys and their it-bags\u201d.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend, the Austrian captain David Alaba sported a $70,000 Birkin, while France\u2019s Marcus Thuram caused a stir with a limited edition, emerald green Chanel flap bag.<\/p>\n

Judd does not expect to see quite the same opulence from Australian players any time soon. While \u201cthe two Goyards are nice \u2026 the orange and the blue\u201d, several Socceroos\u2019 pouches were \u201creally simple\u201d, he said. \u201cOne looked like an airline business class bag.\u201d<\/p>\n

Australia\u2019s Jacob Italiano may have been carrying Dior, but he paired it with \u201ca little plastic thing\u201d, Judd said. \u201cI\u2019m not sure they were taking it that seriously.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest players have all got stylists \u2026 Our boys don\u2019t have stylists.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even the Australian team\u2019s official suit, made from Australian merino wool, is \u201cpractical\u201d and \u201caccessible\u201d, Judd said. \u201cMJ Bale is the business district uniform of Australia. Like you go to Martin Place, or \u2026 Collins Street, and it is the suit du jour.\u201d<\/p>\n

Choosing that particular suit label for the Socceroos kit is \u201cgenius\u201d, Judd said. It speaks to Australian athletes\u2019 relationship to fashion more broadly. \u201cThere\u2019s just generally a little bit more humility.\u201d<\/p>\n
