Former Carlton and Port Adelaide player Nick Stevens been sentenced to jail for fraud, but he is far from the first ex-AFL footballer to serve time behind bars.

From drug-driving, to sexual assault, arson and robbery, an array of former footy stars have faced prison sentences.

Sam Fisher

The once dashing centre-half-back played 228 games for St Kilda and made the All-Australian team in 2008.

After playing 167 matches between 2004 and 2011, he managed just 61 games in his final five seasons and announced his retirement at the end of 2016.

This is where things took a turn for the worst for Fisher, struggling to find employment and adjust to life after football led him down a dark path.

In May 2022, he was arrested and charged over the trafficking of 996 grams of methamphetamine and 82 grams of cocaine from Melbourne to Western Australia.

He pleaded guilty to six offences and was sentenced to a maximum five years and four months in prison.

Ben Cousins

The ‘prince of Perth’ made plenty of headlines on-field across his 270 game career, winning the Brownlow Medal in 2005 before becoming a premiership player with West Coast in 2006.

Towards the end of his time with the Eagles, Cousins had multiple run-ins with the law including fleeing a booze bus in 2006 and being arrested for drug possession and refusing a drug test in 2007, leading to a 12-month AFL ban.

But in March 2017, he was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to 11 offences, including aggravated stalking of his ex-partner, multiple breaches of a violence restraining order, and possession of methamphetamine.

Daniel Kerr

Kerr won a premiership with the Eagles alongside Cousins in 2006. His career spanned from 2001 to 2013 and the midfielder played 220 games.

Though he was a great pairing on-field with Cousins, the midfield duo had their issues off it.

In September 2002, the pair had a fight in a Perth bar after the West Coast best-and-fairest night, where Cousins pushed Kerr down a flight of stairs and broke his arm.

In May 2023, Kerr was jailed for two years for lighting his parents’ house on fire.

It was in February 2021 where Kerr set fire to the backrooms of the Kardinya property.

He also has a suspended jail term of four years and six months over domestic violence charges against his ex-partner.

Andrew Lovett

Lovett’s AFL career started with a bang in 2005, winning the Anzac Day Medal for Essendon in his third game.

He played 88 games for the Bombers before being traded to St Kilda at the end of the 2009 season.

However, in December 2009 he was suspended and later sacked by the Saints without ever playing a game after being accused of sexual assault in an incident at teammate Jason Gram’s home.

Though he was acquitted of the charges in 2011, he never found his way back onto an AFL list.

In March, 2022 Lovett was jailed after pleading guilty to emotional and physical abuse of his partner, including punching, kicking and spitting.

He was sentenced to eight months in prison.

Chris Yarran

Taken with pick no.6 in the 2008 AFL draft, Yarran lived up to the hype at Carlton with his electric pace and ability to play both up forward and down back.

After 119 games, he was traded to Richmond ahead of the 2016 season.

He missed the entire season due to mental-health issues, and after returning on day one of the 2017 pre-season he was mutually released by the Tigers.

Yarran was eventually jailed for five years after a drug-fuelled rampage where he terrorised drivers, stole a car and repeatedly punched and headbutted a police officer in November 2018.

He was sentenced to five years in prison but was let out on parole in 2022.

Andrew Krakouer

Krakouer played 102 games and kicked 102 goals for Richmond from 2001-2007.

He was delisted by the Tigers at the end of the 2007 season after charges from a 2006 nightclub assault came to light.

Alongside his brother Tyrone, Krakouer was found guilty of assault in an incident outside a Fremantle nightclub, and was sentenced to a maximum of 32 months in prison for assault with intent to cause bodily harm.

After being released on parole, he signed for WAFL side Swan Districts for the 2010 season.

He won the Sandover Medal as the best and fairest player in the WAFL, prompting then reigning AFL premier Collingwood to take a punt on the livewire forward.

He won Mark of the Year in 2011, before injuries took a toll and he was delisted at the end of the 2013 season.

Krakouer died on March 30, 2025 aged 42.

Jim Krakouer

After making a name for himself at Claremont in the WAFL, the father of Andrew Krakouer found his way to Arden Street in 1982.

He played 134 games and kicked 229 goals for North Melbourne between 1992 and 1989, before finishing his career at St Kilda in 1991.

He was sentenced to 16 years in jail in 1996 after being convicted of helping transport several kilograms of amphetamines from Victoria to Western Australia.

He was released early in August 2004 and has since been part of a class-action lawsuit against the AFL, alleging that the AFL failed to protect players from racial abuse between 1975 and 2022.

Fred Cook

Cook had a short stint at Footscray from 1967-1969, kicking two goals from 33 games.

He then played two seasons at Yarraville in the VFA before making the move to Port Melbourne, where he would etch his name into Borough folklore. He played 253 games between 1971-1984 for a return of 1210 goals.

The VFA all-time leading goalkicker left his mark, and in 2014 the Lorimer Street end of North Port Oval was renamed the Cook End.

Post-football, Cook became close with notorious criminal Dennis Allen. He became addicted to amphetamines and began to deal.

Between 1990 and 1997 he served three jail terms on drug-related charges.

Cook died on February 1, 2022 aged 74.

Former Carlton and Port Adelaide player Nick Stevens been sentenced to jail for fraud, but he is far…

[560
638,64,63,55,639,85
post-738278","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-afl","tag-afl","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-australian-football-league","tag-australianfootballleague","tag-sports
["GET
